The Chatsworth High baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Easton Sports/Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll, published Friday in USA Today.

The Chancellors (14-1), who won the Colonial Baseball Classic in Orlando, Fla., on April 2, finished one point ahead of Gonzalez (Fla.) Tate, which was 16-0 through Monday.

Hart, which is 17-0 and off to the best start in school history, is ranked No. 7.

“I don’t see anyone else who should be ranked No. 1,” said George Kirchgassner, tournament director of the Colonial Baseball Classic, which included 16 teams from five states.

“If they can walk in here and win it all, they must be the best team in the nation,” he said.

Chatsworth, which has won 13 consecutive games and is 6-0 in West Valley League play, won four games in Florida, including a 5-2 win over Kaiser of Hawaii for the championship.

The ranking, however, came as a surprise.

“We didn’t expect anything like this,” third baseman Joel Wolfe said. “We don’t like to pay too much attention to polls, but this is a real honor.”
