Alemany High continued its resurgence after a mid-season slump, pounding Mira Costa, 13-2, Saturday in a consolation game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament.

After winning their first six games, the Indians lost six of eight. The team was not hitting well, according to Coach Jim Ozella, and players had begun to press.

Now the Indians (12-6) have won four in a row and Ozella is hoping the momentum can vault them into the 5-A Division playoffs. Alemany is 3-2 in Del Rey League play.

“At this point, a lot of our frustration has ceased,” he said. “Hitting is very contagious. When we didn’t hit earlier in the season, no one hit. Now, though, we’re hitting a lot.”

Nine runs in the second inning gave Alemany an 11-1 lead and secured the victory. Alemany sent eight batters to the plate before Mira Costa was able to record an out. By inning’s end, Mira Costa had gone through three pitchers.

Catcher Mike Sims, who led off the second with a single, was 3 for 3 and Jon Beauchemin was 3 for 4 for Alemany.

John Lite added two hits, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

After Mira Costa (5-11) scored one run in the first, starter Charlie Winner settled down and pitched five strong innings, striking out six and allowing four hits.

“Charlie pitched a good game,” Ozella said. “In the first, he had to work out a few bugs because he hadn’t pitched in a while.”

Winner gave way to Brian Milone in the sixth. Milone, making his first appearance of the season, struck out three and allowed one hit in two innings.
