Baseball : Edison Defeats League-Leading Westminster, 5-1

Brian Higgins drove in the game-winning run in the sixth inning and J.J. Throbe scattered eight hits Tuesday as Edison High School defeated first-place Westminster, 5-1, in a Sunset League baseball game at Westminster.

Higgins had a bases-loaded infield single in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Edison (10-11-1, 6-6) broke the game open in the seventh, as Mark Whitcher, who was 2 for 4, had a two-run double and Josh Bammer followed with a single that scored Whitcher.

Higgins (1-3) went the distance, striking out five for the victory.

Westminster (14-9, 7-5) fell into a first-place tie with Huntington Beach. Edison and Fountain Valley are both one game out of first place.

In other Sunset League games:

Huntington Beach 6, Fountain Valley 3--Dominic Alvarez (4-2) threw a four-hitter to lead visiting Huntington Beach (16-6, 7-5). Darrin Vigallon had 3 hits, including a solo home run in the sixth, 3 RBIs and one run scored for Huntington Beach, which had 8 hits.

Marina 8, Ocean View 7 (8 innings)--Robin Lindsey, who was 3 for 5, singled in the winning run with two out in the eighth inning for host Marina (9-13-1, 3-8-1). Chris Boyd pitched 1 innings of relief for the victory.

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Chris Nott hit a two-run home run in the third to break a 2-2 tie and James Noonan threw a four-hitter, striking out 11, for visiting Ontario Christian. Kit Bennitt (1-4) also struck out 11 but took the loss for Capistrano Valley Christian (6-12, 1-8).

Orange Lutheran 8, Valley Christian 6--Jason Dahl hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Orange Lutheran the lead. Dahl, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the third, also had an RBI double. Trailing, 6-4, in the fifth, Orange Lutheran (17-7, 7-3) tied the score on a two-run double by Ken Hughie. Rich Gress had three hits and an RBI for the Lancers. Ward Lookabaugh (9-2) went the distance for the victory.
