USD Baseball Finishes at .500

The University of San Diego finished its baseball season at .500 (28-28) with a 12-2 victory Wednesday over Cal Baptist College at Cunningham Stadium.

Dave Rolls and Sean Baron hit home runs to lead an 18-hit attack.

Rolls, a senior, finished with school season records in homers (18), runs batted in (70) and walks (57). Baron ended up with career records in home runs (43) and RBIs (171).

Junior Chuck Graham finished with 82 hits, a school record, and a .400 batting average. Mark Trafton, another senior, set a career record for triples (21).

USD award winners were announced after the game: hustle award--Dan McAdoo; most improved player--Parris Sorianello; rookie of the year--James Ferguson; pitcher of the year--Ferguson; leading hitters--Rolls and Trafton; most valuable player--Rolls; captain’s award--Trafton.

FOOTBALL

Eugene Goodlow, a former receiver for the New Orleans Saints, was one of five free agents signed by the Chargers.

Goodlow, a third-round draft choice in 1983 out of Kansas State, caught 115 passes for New Orleans from 1983-86.

Also signed by San Diego: receiver Danny Greene from the University of Washington, running back Eric Franklin from Cal State Fullerton, tight end Mark Walczak from Arizona and outside linebacker Alvis Satele from Hawaii.

The San Diego Sharks were announced as one of six franchises in the World Indoor Football League. Similar to the Arena Football League, the WIFL will begin play in June, organizers said.

TENNIS

Louella Parsons, the fifth-seeded player from Carpinteria, was upset in the first round of the women’s 50-and-over National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Parsons lost to Betsy Roberti of Santa Monica, 6-2, 6-0.

Among the seeded players advancing was defending champion Pat Kujawski of Rancho Bernardo, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Grace Findlay of Clifton Park, N.J.
