Prep Roundup : Canyon’s Sara Roberts Pitches a Perfect Game

Freshman Sara Roberts (5-3) pitched a perfect game and struck out six Saturday to lead Canyon High School (16-7-1) to a 3-0 victory in the consolation semifinal of the Thousand Oaks softball tournament.

DaLynn Large tripled and scored on Sherry Panchisin’s single to provide the winning run at Thousand Oaks.

Canyon (17-7-1) went on to win the consolation final, 3-1, over Rio Mesa. Senior Katie Kramer (12-4) picked up the victory by retiring the last 12 batters she faced. She also scored the winning run when Panchisin singled her home with two out in the top of the seventh.

In Angelus League baseball:

Servite 5, Bishop Montgomery 0--Chad Troxel (5-0) relieved Craig Barkley in the third inning and allowed one hit and struck out three in five innings for host Servite (18-5 overall, 11-2 in league play).

Mater Dei 11, Bishop Amat 0--Brian Frankel (6-1) pitched a two-hitter to lead Mater Dei (19-2, 11-2) at Bishop Amat.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 9, Fountain Valley 8--Edison (11-11-1, 7-6) scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 8-1, and Brian Higgins squeezed home Daryl Mead for what proved to be the winning run in the sixth. Fountain Valley scored seven runs in the final two innings to make it close.

In the Sea View League boys’ swimming finals:

Chris Oeding won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 45.15 seconds) and the 500 (4:49.37), and Jeff Thomason won the 50 (21.78) and 100 (47.51) to lead Corona del Mar to the championship. Paul Berrara of Tustin won the 100 butterfly (54.85) and the 100 backstroke (57.41).

In the Sea View League girls’ swimming finals:

Corona del Mar won the championship with 431 points to second-place Newport Harbor’s 357. Devon Coat of Tustin won the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.87) and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.20).

In South Coast League tennis:

Mission Viejo 11, Capistrano Valley 7--Mission Viejo (5-14, 4-6) won a one-match playoff at the San Juan Racquet Club to finish third in league and advance to the Southern Section playoffs. Mission Viejo defeated Capistrano Valley (10-10, 4-6) on Friday to force Saturday’s playoff.

In boys’ weightlifting:

San Clemente 38, Esperanza 37, Carson 22--Brent Dunning won the 174-pound class to lead host San Clemente in the South Orange County weightlifting invitational. Dunning had a 700-pound total, bench-pressing 285 and lifting 415 in the full-squat.

In girls’ weightlifting:

San Clemente 21, Narbonne 10--Host San Clemente won easily and had particular success in the 115-pound class, where Regina Barrette and Heidi Munson tied with totals of 240. Barrette was determined the winner because she weighed one-half pound less than Munson.
