Prep Roundup : Baugh Wins Southern Section Golf Title

Matt Baugh of Huntington Beach High School won the Southern Section individual golf championship Monday at La Purisma golf course in Lompoc.

Baugh, a senior, shot an even-par 72 to finish three strokes ahead of Charlie Wi of Westlake. Wi tied with five others at 75, but took second place on the second hole of a playoff.

“It’s a hard course, but I don’t think it’s unfair,” Baugh said. “The adrenaline was flowing and I was pretty pumped up.

“I wanted to win because I feel, as a player, I’ve been underrated. I think my clubs did the talking (today).”

The top 22 finishers qualified for the CIF Southern California Golf Assn. Southern California Championships June 6 at La Jolla.

Other Orange County qualifiers included:

Joon Lee of Sunny Hills and Frank Patoja of Edison, who shot 75; Bob Jacobsen of University, who shot 77; Austin Maki of Estancia and Robert Haslan of El Toro, who shot 80.
