Softball Roundup : Huntington Beach Defeats Edison in 22 Innings, 1-0

Heather MacTavish singled in the winning run with one out in the 22nd inning to boost Huntington Beach High School to a 1-0 victory over Edison in a Sunset League softball game that lasted five hours at Huntington Beach.

Oiler pitcher Pam Fogg pitched all 22 innings, scattering 9 hits, striking out 6 and walking 1 (intentionally) for the victory.

Edison’s Terry Carpenter gave up 6 hits and struck out 30 of the 62 batters she faced in 19 innings. Julie Helm, who relieved Carpenter in the top of the 20th, allowed three hits and the winning run.

Tamra Wood led off the 22nd inning for Huntington Beach with a single down the third base line. Shanen Kreipl hit a line shot to shortstop and reached first on a fielder’s choice. Angie Luzio singled and Sasha Kyle was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, MacTavish singled to drive in Kreipl.

“I told the girls before the game that the only way they could disappoint me is if they gave up today,” Julie Parmenter, Huntington Beach coach, said. “That was my entire pep talk. Basically, they did exactly what I asked them to do.”

Edison, the Sunset League’s second-place team, is 5-4-1 in league play. Huntington Beach (13-13, 4-6) finished fourth.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 1, Marina 0 (13 innings)--Kami Bigler tripled home the winning run with two out in the 13th as host Fountain Valley clinched the league championship. Rae Rice (16-5) threw a 5-hitter, striking out 8.

Ocean View 1, Westminster 0--Sophomore Marla Pickard (4-1) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 5 and walking 2 for the victory at Ocean View. Jennifer Phillips scored the run on a wild pitch in the second inning. Ocean View (14-12, 5-5) will play Marina (12-11, 5-5) today at 3:15 at Golden West College for the third-place position in league and the No. 3 playoff spot. Westminster finished 13-14 and 3-7.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 3, Brea-Olinda 1--Nadine Ditto threw a 3-hitter at Tamarack Park in Brea.

The victory advances Savanna (17-11, 6-4) to the Southern Section 3-A playoffs as the league’s No 3 team. The Rebels finished tied for third with Brea-Olinda, but advanced to the playoffs because of their victory over first-place Western.

Brea-Olinda (16-6, 6-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Savanna tied the score in the second on a triple by Rosie Ferrante and a single by Carrie Fredrick.

The score remained tied until the seventh, when the Rebels scored twice. Dawn Salter singled home a run for a 2-1 lead and Savanna added another run on an error.

Valencia 7, Magnolia 0--Michele Granger threw a one-hitter, striking out 18, to lead Valencia (20-6, 7-3) at Magnolia. Granger (19-3) allowed just a first-inning single. Valencia finishes the regular season in second place.

Western 9, Anaheim 0--Wendy McDermott (8-2) gave up 3 hits, struck out 5 and had 2 RBIs to lead Western at home. Teresa Andersen went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI to help the Pioneers (15-10, 8-2). Western, the Orange League champion, advances to the Southern Section 3-A playoffs as the league’s No. 1 representative.

In the Empire League:

Loara 3, Katella 2 (8 innings)--Jill Stiles singled home the winning run with one out in the eighth for host Loara (10-15, 5-5). The Saxons trailed, 2-0, with two out in the seventh but tied the score on a single by Heidi Sorour and a bases-loaded walk to Andrea Neitzke. Krinon Lapihuska (9-11) threw a 4-hitter, striking out 8.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 4, Troy 2--Ich Inose had 2 hits and 2 RBIs to lead host Fullerton (8-14, 5-5), which finished tied for third with Buena Park. Janet Gallant (8-14) went the distance for the victory. Fullerton and Buena Park will play at Troy High School today to decide the league’s third-place representative for the Southern Section 2-A playoffs.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 4, Bolsa Grande 1--Laurie Graper (4-3) scattered 5 hits, struck out 7 and had 2 hits to lead league champion Kennedy (20-5, 14-0) at home.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 10, Newport Harbor 0--Junior Jayne Ondracek (10-3) pitched a 1-hitter for Tustin, the Sea View League champion, at Newport Harbor. Ondracek struck out 5. The only hit came in the sixth inning. Tustin finishes the regular season with a 17-4 and 14-1 record.

University 5, Estancia 3--K.C. Craig and Shelly Fraiser each had RBI singles in the bottom of the third to give host University (15-6, 13-2) a 4-2 lead. Shareen Patton (15-5) went the distance, striking out five, for the victory. Kelly Wylie had a two-run homer for Estancia (6-9 in league play). University finishes the regular season in second place.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 3, El Toro 1--Jennifer Brundage and Merris Welch each drove in runs in the fourth to give Irvine (12-13, 4-6) a 2-1 lead at Harvard Park in Irvine. Brundage (10-12) threw a 2-hitter, striking out 5.

Mission Viejo 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Mission Viejo scored twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Tamar deFries and Rene Pina at Capistrano Valley. Winning pitcher Jenn Heydt (9-1) allowed three hits. The victory clinches second place for Mission Viejo (18-7, 7-3).

San Clemente 6, Dana Hills 2--Niqua Monson (10-3) threw a 2-hitter and struck out 9, a season-high, for the victory at Dana Hills. Wendy Shean had a triple and Amy Henderson had two RBIs to help league champion San Clemente (19-6, 9-1).

In the Sunrise League:

Rosary 4, Connelly 3--Suzi Cannery (9-3) threw a 4-hitter, striking out 5, as Rosary (18-6, 10-0) clinched the league championship at Lions Field in Fullerton. Connelly (8-2 in league play) led, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fourth, but Rosary scored three runs, two on doubles by Julie Alig and Louise Grimm. Janice Stadel added a solo home run in the fifth for Rosary.
