Led by senior Chris Zambri’s 2-over-par 74, Westlake breezed to an easy win in the Southern Section’s Northwest Regional team tournament at Olivas Park Golf Course in Ventura on Monday.

Westlake, Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara advance to the Southern Section team final Monday at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs. Twelve teams will compete in the event, four of which will advance to the CIF/Southern California Golf Assn. finals on June 6 at La Jolla Country Club in La Jolla. Westlake is also the defending CIF/SCGA champion.

In City Section baseball games:

Fairfax 7, Grant 1--Despite the loss, the fourth-place Lancers (11-10, 9-8) are still in contention for a playoff spot in the East Valley League. Grant needs a win Wednesday at Sylmar or a Fairfax loss to Hollywood to clinch the final playoff spot.

Fairfax (10-13, 8-9) bolted to a 7-0 lead after two innings on home runs by Mike Rahey and Earl Johnson. Johnson’s second-inning grand slam chased Grant starter Jason Parker (3-6). Fairfax senior left-hander Art Johnson struck out nine and pitched a complete game four-hitter.

Glen Rothstein relieved Parker and didn’t allow a hit in 5 innings. Grant scored its only run on a home run by John Kukawski, who was 2 for 3.

“I gambled today by starting Parker,” Grant Coach Tom Lucero said. “But I still have my ace in the hole with Javier Delahoya.”

Delahoya (5-2, 2.92 earned-run average) is scheduled to start Wednesday.

Sylmar 6, North Hollywood 5--The Spartans jumped on North Hollywood junior right-hander Bennie Valdez (6-4) for seven hits in the first inning and scored all six of their runs in the inning in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Sylmar (11-6 in league) moved past North Hollywood (10-7) into second place with one game remaining in the regular season.

Art Monreal, who was 2 for 4, keyed the Sylmar rally with a run-scoring triple. Nino Romo (7-4) picked up the win with relief help from Tony Branson, who earned the save.

North Hollywood scored twice in the first, added two in the fourth on Claudio Meluje’s two-run triple and pushed across another run on Steve Elbaum’s triple in the fifth to make it close. The Huskies, however, botched several plays that could have given them a win.

“We made a number of baserunning errors and blew two squeeze plays that resulted in outs,” North Hollywood Coach Brian York said. “The game was exciting for the players, but in terms of execution, it was far below the level we expected.”
