Mt. Carmel High may have clinched its seventh Palomar League baseball championship in the last nine years when it defeated Fallbrook Thursday, but this is a title the Sundevils are going to have to share.

Poway, which entered league play this season with a 6-5 record and little recognition, gained its share of the championship Thursday when it defeated Orange Glen, 5-4, in nine innings at Orange Glen.

The co-championship is Poway’s first title in the league’s nine-year history. Poway finished the regular season 16-7 and 10-2 in the league.

Steve Wrenn snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-out single that scored Mike Beam. John Uglow (4-3), who allowed only three hits over the final eight innings, got the victory.

A coin flip will be held today to determine whether it will be Poway or Mt. Carmel that will earn the league’s No. 1 berth for the upcoming San Diego Section 3-A playoffs.

“We’ve played well all season,” Poway Coach Rudy Casciato said. “Now I just hope we flip well.”

Casciato is in his first year at Poway after being an assistant for seven years at Mt. Carmel.

Orange Glen went in the opposite direction. After winning the league championship a year ago, the Patriots did not win a league game (finishing 6-21-1, 0-12) this season.
