Rene Arias, a sophomore right-hander, threw a no-hitter Friday as Fullerton High School defeated Leuzinger, 1-0, in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A baseball playoffs at Fullerton.

Arias (8-1) retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced, striking out four and not allowing a walk.

Tyrone Scott, a Leuzinger left-hander, also had an impressive outing. Scott struck out 12 and didn’t allow a base hit until Jeff Manship’s infield single to lead off the sixth inning.

Manship stole second, but Scott struck out the next two batters. Sophomore center fielder John Bailey then hit a ground single into center to score Manship.

“We needed to make something happen,” Fullerton Coach Martin Luczaj said. “So, we just put the steal sign on. We were getting a little frustrated with Scott.”

Scott struck out seven in the first three innings.

Arias allowed just two baserunners. He hit designated hitter Alex Sanchez in the second inning, but picked him off at second.

In the fifth, Carlos Rodriguez got on base on an error, but was thrown out trying to steal.

Fullerton, which plays Newhall Hart in Tuesday’s second round, is 19-7. Leuzinger finished the season at 12-16.

Santa Ana 5, Glendora 3--Octavio Medina tripled and then scored the winning run on an error to lead Santa Ana, which scored three runs in the sixth inning at home. Medina went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Bob Reimers relieved starter George Carachure (6-1) in the seventh inning for the save. Santa Ana is 17-9. Glendora finished the season 18-9.
