Catcher Greg Pirkl of Los Alamitos High School, who had 50 hits--including 10 home runs--heads the list of selections for the North team that will participate in the 21st Orange County All-Star baseball game set for June 14 in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.
Pirkl was the 40th player selected in baseball’s amateur draft Wednesday. He was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the second round. Joining Pirkl on the North squad is teammate Mike Kelly, who earlier this year signed with Arizona State.
North Coach Kevin McConnell of Valencia selected only one player from his team, shortstop Mike Edwards, who was the county’s leading hitter at .570. Canyon pitcher John Cummings, the county’s strikeout leader with 115, was also chosen.
