Girls’ Athletes of the Week : TRACK AND FIELD

Kira Jorgensen, a junior at Rancho Buena Vista, successfully defended her state title in the 1,600-meter run, winning in 4 minutes 49.54 seconds Saturday at Cerritos College. Jorgensen also finished fourth in the 3,200 at 10:25.55, about nine seconds behind West Covina South Hills’ Karen Hecox.

Grossmont junior La Frania West went a personal-best 40-feet 8 3/4-inches in the triple jump to finish second in the state meet. West led after Friday’s qualifying round and matched her 40-8 3/4 performance in the championship, but senior Althea Moses of Inglewood Morningside went 40-9 3/4 on her second-to-last jump.

Lynn Patrick of Serra finished second in the high jump at the state championships. Patrick, a junior who won the event last year, lost on misses to Crissy Mills, a sophomore at North Hollywood Campbell Hall. Mills cleared 5-10 on her first try, Patrick on her third. Neither jumper succeeded at 6-0.
