Rees Named Section Player of the Year

Senior Sean Rees, a pitcher from Mission Bay High, has been named the San Diego Section baseball player of the year, the Hall of Champions has announced.
Rees was 10-1 and struck out 105 during the regular season. He also batted .430 and had 35 runs batted in. In the playoffs, he pitched seven strong innings in the 2-A championship game against Castle Park and won, 2-1.
He plans to attend Arizona State on a baseball scholarship in the fall.
Rick Navarro of Helix, who recently announced that he will attend San Diego State, was the other pitcher on the first team. He was 14-0 in the regular season and led Helix to the 3-A title.
Felipe Preciado (10-1) of Hoover, Brent Woodall (8-2) of La Jolla and Juan Beltran of Castle Park (8-2) were used primarily as pitchers, but they were named to the first team as utility players.
Four juniors were selected to the first team. In addition to Beltran and Preciado, Jeff Myers of Carlsbad (.469, county-leading 47 RBIs, 7 home runs) and Darin Forster of Santana (7 home runs) will be back next year.
The team was picked by a panel of sportswriters.
TRACK AND FIELD
Seth Serriano, John Rose and Brooke Risner were double winners at the San Diego Track Club All-Comers Track and Field Meet at Balboa Stadium.
Serriano won the men’s 400 meters (52.23) and 1,500 meters (3:58.3, hand-timed). Rose was first in the shotput (52-feet 10 1/2-inches) and discus (174-0). Risner won the women’s high jump (5-0) and long jump (14-10).
The next scheduled meet is Saturday at Balboa Stadium. Registration is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The shotput has been added to the schedule of events for the Michelob Invitational track and field meet Saturday, June 25, at Balboa Stadium, meet promoters announced. The featured performer will be Texas A&M;’s Randy Barnes, who is best in the United States and second best in the world this year with a throw of 72 feet 6 1/2 inches.
