Mater Dei Basketball Tournament, With 26 Teams, to Run June 23-26

Lakewood High School, with three returning starters from a team that reached the Southern Section 5-A semifinals, is among 26 teams entered in the Mater Dei summer basketball tournament, which begins June 23 at two sites.

Among Lakewood’s top players are 6-foot 8-inch center Victor Camper and his cousin, 6-5 forward Brian Camper, and 6-6 forward Aaron Adams. Santa Clara, Ocean View, Mater Dei and St. Bernard also will enter strong teams.

Top players scheduled to compete include forward Scott McCorkle of Capistrano Valley, forward Khari Johnson of El Toro, guard Chris Sheff of Laguna Hills, forward Todd Norman of Ocean View, guard Dijon Bernard of Dominguez, center Ed Stokes of St. Bernard, guard Dylan Rigdon of Mater Dei, center Greg Willig of St. Paul and center Bubba Burrage of Santa Clara.

The four-day tournament concludes June 26 with the championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. in Ocean View’s gymnasium.

The first-round pairings:

At Mater Dei: 9 a.m.--Trabuco Hills vs. St. Bernard; 10:30--Palisades vs. Santa Ana Valley; Noon--Laguna Hills vs. Foothill; 1:30 p.m.--University vs. Bosco Tech; 3--El Toro vs. Bishop Amat; 4:30--Newport Harbor vs. Los Alamitos; 6--Lakewood vs. Camarillo; 7:30--Mater Dei vs. Los Amigos; 9--Capistrano Valley vs. Mater Dei JV.

At Ocean View: 6 p.m.--St. Paul vs. Pius X; 7:30--Santa Barbara vs. Dominguez; 9--Ocean View vs. Tustin.

Santa Clara and Fairfax drew first-round byes.
