South Aims to Use Speed to Topple North

The North team has a distinct height advantage, but the South team will try to counter with superior quickness when the girls’ Orange County All-Star basketball game is played tonight beginning at 5 in UC Irvine’s Bren Center.

The North has won the last two games but has won only three of the 10 games played since the girls’ game began in 1978.

The South has only three players 6-feet or taller. But Cindy Kollar, a 5-10 forward from La Quinta; Tricia Stringam, a 5-11 guard from Mission Viejo; Elaine Youngs, a 6-0 forward from El Toro, and Tami Chick, a 5-11 forward from Huntington Beach, all played in fast-breaking programs last season. Greg Yeck, the South coach, said the team will try to run whenever it gets the chance.

Donna Gondringer, a 6-2 center from La Quinta, is the South’s tallest player. Gondringer averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Aztecs. She was a first-team All-Southern Section 2-A player and was a member of The Times’ All-County team.

She’ll find plenty of company under the basket, since the North team has five players 6-feet or taller.

Jennifer Ensley, a 6-2 center, and Diane Sands, a 6-0 center, were an imposing tandem for Los Alamitos last season and should make rebounding difficult for the South.

Ensley averaged 19.2 points and 12.6 rebounds and Sands 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Karin Davidson, a 6-1 center/forward from Esperanza, and Sabryna Welch, a 5-11 forward from Fullerton, add to the North’s height advantage.
