Helix Baseball Team Gets Top Ranking in Southern California

The Helix High School baseball team was ranked first in Southern California in Cal-Hi Sports’ final 1987-88 state baseball rankings. Led by left-handed pitcher Rick Navarro (13-0), Helix finished 26-2.

Helix finished second in the state in the 4-A rankings, behind Fresno Bullard (29-1). Mission Bay (25-3-1) was second in 3-A to Moraga Camp Olindo (24-5), and Castle Park (25-5-1) was second in the 2-A poll to Soquel (25-6). Carlsbad (21-5) was 10th in 2-A.

Navarro, Mike Rendina of Grossmont and Sean Rees of Mission Bay were named to the large schools (4-A and 3-A) all-state team, and Jeff Myers of Carlsbad, Dwayne Wilson of Oceanside and Juan Beltran of Castle Park were named to the medium schools (2-A) all-state team.

In softball, Fallbrook (22-4) finished fifth and Madison (28-3) was sixth, both in the 4-A state poll and in the final Southern California poll.

BOXING

Antoine Byrd will fight David Vedder in a 12-round title bout for the California super middleweight championship Friday at the Del Mar Fair.

The fight, sanctioned by the California State Boxing Commission, will be preceded by four preliminary professional fights, including one eight-round heavyweight fight. Boxing begins at 8 p.m.

Byrd, of Pomona, is 8-11-1 with six knockouts. Vedder, from San Jose, is 10-7-2.

The boxing matches will be held in the Arena, which is located in the fair’s Durante area.
