Capistrano Valley Is Favored to Win in Beach Basketball

Capistrano Valley High School, which has won three summer basketball tournaments, is the favorite in Dana Hills’ beach tournament, which will begin Thursday at the Capistrano Beach Park.

Capistrano Valley is undefeated in summer league play and has won its tournament, plus the Mater Dei and Newport Harbor tournaments. The Cougars feature junior forward Scott McCorkle and guard Bill Mazurie, a transfer student.

The 16-team tournament includes three teams from Northern California and one from New Mexico. Among the top players scheduled to compete are Scott Campbell (La Quinta), Cherokee Parks (Marina), John Lloyd (Dana Hills) and Stefan Moomaw (University).

All games will be played on the beach’s basketball courts, except one first-round game in Dana Hills’ gymnasium. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

First-round pairings:

9 a.m.--Capistrano Beach vs. Ceres; 10:15--Western vs. University; 11:30--San Clemente vs. Los Alamos (N.M.); 12:45 p.m.--Marina vs. Troy; 2--Dana Hills vs. Newport Harbor; 3:15--Savanna vs. Laguna Beach; 4:30--Newark (Union City) vs. La Quinta.

At Dana Hills: 10 a.m.--Antioch vs. Irvine.
