American Legion : 8 Starters Post RBIs in 18-5 Win

It takes a solid team to compile a record of 21-5, and in a regular-season District 20 finale Saturday, Newhall-Saugus (Santa Clarita) made it a point to play team-oriented baseball.

At least, that is what the results indicate.

Eight starters knocked in runs and six drove in two as Santa Clarita, the Northern Division champion, defeated Sepulveda, 18-5, at Saugus High.

Santa Clarita used the team approach in the first inning, parlaying five singles and a double into five runs. Santa Clarita added five more runs in the second on four hits.

Right-hander Glenn Terry (4-0) allowed six hits in five innings to earn the win. Reliever Doug Maggiora struck out all three batters he faced in the sixth.

Tom Dodson had three hits, and Darrell Davis, Brad Anderson, Cory Byars and Kevin Backes each had two for Santa Clarita, which opens District 20 playoff action Wednesday.

Woodland Hills (West) 9, Mission Hills 0--Right-hander Mike Roberts (6-0) allowed three hits, struck out 12 and walked four in the nine-inning complete game.

Jason Cohen homered, Bryce Welch was 3 for 5 and Bobby Kim had two hits for West, (22-4) the Western Division champion.

Reseda 10, North Hollywood 0--Right-hander Andy Rangel (7-1) threw a four-hitter, striking out five and walking one as Reseda (18-8) won its 11th game in a row and 15th in 17 outings.

For Reseda, Mike Shwartzer was 2 for 3 with a triple, double and four runs batted in. Mike Vanacore, Mike Aranzullo, Damon Lantz and Donnie Grant each added two hits.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame 7, Granada Hills 4--The defending District 20 champion rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the sixth with six runs, keyed by two-run singles by Chad Ratliff and Kevin Milligan.

Granada Hills right-hander Mitch Cizek blanked Van Nuys-Notre Dame until the sixth but eventually was outpitched by right-hander Billy Jay (2-2).

Valley (ET) 10, Reseda-Cleveland 5--One day after an 8-7 upset of Encino-Crespi, Valley (3-22) pulled off another surprise behind the hitting of Ernie Perez, who was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs.

Palmdale 6, Woodland Hills (East) 2--East outhit Palmdale, 10-6, but stranded 10 baserunners. Jason Shapiro, Ceo Wimmer and David Keys each had two hits for East (11-15).

Camarillo 4, Westlake 2--With the score tied, 1-1, in the seventh inning, Chris Johnson delivered a two-run single and Juan Cuellar singled to drive in another to lead Camarillo (21-3) in a District 16 game. Derron Spiller (7-0) pitched seven complete innings. Steve Biggs entered in the eighth to notch his first save.

Chatsworth 13-5, Sun Valley 7-4--John Haselbusch was 7 for 8, had 6 RBIs and scored 4 runs to lead Chatsworth (20-5-1) to the District 20 doubleheader sweep.
