Zak Krislock Leads West to 33-0 Win Over East

There’s usually something lacking in summer football games.

Teams normally don’t have much time to prepare, and football is a precision sport that relies on timing and finesse. In other words, the teams just aren’t together long enough to get in sync.

That, however, did not bother South Torrance High quarterback Zak Krislock, who led his West team to a 33-0 victory over the East in the 24th annual Lions Club all-star football game at El Camino College on Thursday night.

Krislock, who will attend UC Irvine on a baseball scholarship, was nearly flawless in directing his team to victory. And, come to find out, he was a bit surprised by the outcome.

“I didn’t think we’d score at all,” he said, “but the offensive line just dominated. I really wanted to win this game because it’s my last. It was a pretty good swan song.”

The West trounced and trod upon their opponents from the East in a game that was virtually decided by halftime.

The West, which led 26-0 at halftime, put the capper on the game with 11:09 remaining when Krislock hit St. Bernard’s Eric Nelson with a 20-yard touchdown pass. The West dominated the first half with big plays that left the East confused, reeling and trailing.

South Torrance High’s Brett Austin struck first by picking off Eric Hamilton’s pass and running it into the end zone from 10 yards out.

Next, Grant Pittman of St. Bernard scored on a 15-yard run.

Then Lawndale’s Greg Franklin, in his only carry of the first half, took a handoff from Krislock and rambled 80 yards for the West’s third score.

Krislock and his mates weren’t finished.

With two seconds remaining in the half, the South quarterback handed the ball to Bishop Montgomery’s Niu Sale, who hit Hawthorne’s Travis Hannah with a nifty 43-yard touchdown pass.
