Mater Dei High School’s 1987-88 varsity cheerleading squad traveled to Tokyo on July 21 to compete in the International Cheerleading competition.
After winning the national championship in February, the squad placed second in the show/cheer division of the international competition. The team performed the same routine it used to win the title in Florida but, because of a two-point penalty, finished as runner-up to Terre Haute High School of Indiana.
The cheerleaders who competed for Mater Dei in Tokyo were Greg Alvarez, Ben Clark, Tamara Harris, Rob Hartstein, Daphne Henn, Cindy Herrera, head cheerleader Kevin Kelly, Fred Olivieri, Sean Parsons, Monique Raymer, Matt Retoski, Larry Signaigo, Marlene Solis and Kristin Wilmot.
