PREP FOOTBALL : Bellflower Stops Trabuco Hills

Bellflower High School handed Trabuco Hills its first loss of the season, 21-14, Friday night before 1,000 spectators at Mission Viejo High School.

A fumble recovery on the Trabuco Hills 3 yard line by Bellflower’s Bart Brehm after a Buccaneer punt was the key. On the next play, Bellflower running back Paul Sin scored to break a 14-14 tie and Danny Schneider’s extra point kick made it 21-14.

The victory was Bellflower’s third in a row. Trabuco Hills is 2-1.

Following Bellflower’s go-ahead touchdown, Trabuco Hills’ quarterback David Lowery had a pass intercepted by Kevin Lazard, his second of the game, with 5:39 to go.

Bellflower, on Sin’s 10 carries, ran out the clock. Sin scored two touchdowns with 62 yards on 16 carries. Shawn Jones had 63 yards on 17 carries for the winners.

Lazard’s first pass interception set up Bellflower’s initial touchdown. Three plays later, he took a 15-yard pass from quarterback Mike Simmons to score with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

Trabuco Hills’ Ben Rooker ran a yard for the Mustangs’ first score with 6:10 left in the half to make it 7-6 Trabuco Hills.

With 2:09 left in the first half, Sin scored his first touchdown on a 5-yard run, then ran for the extra points to make it Bellflower 14-7 at halftime.

Chad DeYoung scored Trabuco Hills’ final touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Lowery.
