PREP FOOTBALL : Roundup : Troy Keeps Its Streak With Win

Troy High School extended its scoreless streak to 10 quarters in a 26-0 victory over Brea-Olinda Friday night at Fullerton High School.

The Warriors (3-0) have not given up a point since the second quarter of their season opener against Rancho Alamitos. The Wildcats are 0-3.

Troy held Brea-Olinda to a minus 2 yards in total offense in the second half and 55 yards for the game. Troy opened the scoring in the first quarter, taking advantage of a short punt by Brea and a return that gave the Warriors the ball on the Brea 15-yard line.

Despite a clipping penalty, quarterback Brad Zeppieri was able to engineer a score with a 20-yard pass to wide receiver Tom Wilson for a 6-0 lead.

Troy linebacker Brett Wells set up his team’s second score with a fumble recovery at the Warrior 33. Two plays later, Mark Stichter, who finished with 91 yards rushing, took a delayed draw play 47 yards for a touchdown.

Troy took a 20-0 advantage at halftime on a 68-yard, 6-play drive. Zeppieri tossed his second touchdown, this time to Reggie Essex on a 14-yard pass.

Troy’s final touchdown came early in the fourth quarter, after a Dave Bloom fumble recovery set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Chris Conway.

Huntington Beach 10, Newport Harbor 7--Junior running back Doug Cunningham scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and Tony Canini kicked a 31-yard field goal in the second as Huntington Beach High School won Friday night in front of 2,000 at Newport Harbor.

Cunningham scored on Huntington Beach’s (1-2) first play from scrimmage after defensive back Kevin Dickey returned an interception 37 yards to the Newport 1 yard line. Canini’s field goal came midway through the second period and climaxed a 10-play, 49-yard Huntington Beach drive.

Senior quarterback Eric Pettinato led Huntington Beach’s attack, completing 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards and an interception. Junior Jeff Dunnagan caught 4 passes for 52 yards and led the Oilers in rushing with 39 yards in 10 carries.

Newport (1-2) got back in the game with 8:20 remaining in the final period, when senior running back Tom Walker caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tim Newberry. The Sailors then drove to the Huntington Beach 25 with about 2 minutes left before a holding penalty stalled the drive.

Walker had 8 receptions for 67 yards and led Newport in rushing with 39 yards in 14 carries. Newberry completed 13 of 28 passes for 145 yards and an interception.

Buena Park 14, Magnolia 14--Pat McNeil scored all of Magnolia’s points, as the Sentinels rallied in the second half for the tie at Buena Park.

With Buena Park leading, 14-0, McNeil scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter. However, the kick failed leaving the Coyotes with a 14-6 lead.

McNeil scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth and then ran for the conversion to tie the score, 14-14.

Matt Acevedo accounted for both of Buena Park’s touchdowns. He scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Steve Hickman.
