St. Joseph’s has been prohibited from participating in any sports championship tournaments this school year because the Philadelphia university failed to attract enough participants in two women’s sports, the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. said.
NCAA Division I members without football teams must sponsor at least six varsity sports each for men and women. The sports also have minimum participation requirements, which the NCAA said St. Joseph’s failed to meet in women’s indoor and outdoor track.
The restricted status allows the school to participate in regular-season competition.
