Senior running back Dereck Harris rushed for 110 yards to lead a potent Cypress High School ground attack, and the Centurions upset Anaheim, 14-7, in a nonleague game Thursday in front of 950 at Western High School.

Harris, who had 27 carries, put Cypress (1-3) ahead with a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. That play capped an 11-play, 62-yard drive, in which Harris carried the ball 8 times for 43 yards.

Anaheim (1-3) took an early lead on a 65-yard pass from quarterback Danny Pacillas to Justin Wons on the Colonists’ second play from scrimmage.

The Centurion defense did not allow the Colonists to threaten again the rest of the game. Cypress limited Anaheim to just 22 yards rushing.

“We did a good job shutting down the rushing game and that was the difference,” Cypress Coach John Selbe said.

Trailing, 7-0, the Centurions tied the score with a 10-play, 41-yard drive in the second quarter. Earl Norman’s 1-yard run was Cypress’ first touchdown of the season.

The Centurions could not shut down Pacillas, who threw for 194 yards.

“We wanted them try to beat us through the air and after that first pass play, I was beginning to have second thoughts,” Selbe said.
