SDSU Honors Gilbreath, Hewitt

Junior wide receiver Monty Gilbreath and senior tailback Paul Hewitt were named most valuable players at the annual San Diego State football team banquet Tuesday night.

Gilbreath, also named most inspirational player, led the team with 60 receptions for 799 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Hewitt finished his career with a school-record-tying 204 points and this season rushed for 1,055 yards to become the first Aztec to twice gain more than 1,000 yards in a season. His 2-year career total of 2,056 yards is fourth on the all-time list.

Other awards went to senior center Kevin Wells (outstanding offensive lineman), junior nose tackle Brad Burton (outstanding defensive lineman), senior strong safety Casey Copeland (coaches’ award), junior offensive guard Roman Fortin (president’s award), senior offensive tackle Samida Tuiaana (most improved player), junior outside linebacker John Wesselman (most valuable special teams player), freshman running back Larry Maxey (offensive prep player) and freshman defensive back Eric Nelson (defensive prep player).

The captains’ trophy was presented to the three senior tri-captains--wide receiver Alfred Jackson, cornerback Mario Mitchell and Wells.

Southwestern College (6-4) will play Antelope Valley College (8-1-1) of Lancaster in the National Football Foundation-Hall of Fame Bowl Game at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Balboa Stadium.

Southwestern will be making its third appearance in the game while Antelope Valley is the first non-county team to participate. Antelope Valley finished second in the Foothill League and is ranked No. 17 in the state. Southwestern won the Southern Division of the Mission Conference with a 4-0 record.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

South Carolina handed San Diego-based Athletes in Action its 10th consecutive defeat, 87-78, at Columbia. Rod Foster paced AIA with 20 points, and Darryl Martin, who played at South Carolina last year, had 10 rebounds.

Christian Heritage defeated Point Loma Nazarene College, 96-82, to improve its record to 3-0. Mark Kraatz of Christian Heritage led all scorers with 25 points. Point Loma (1-1) was outrebounded, 46-28.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Jill Koster scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to an 84-75 victory over visiting Whitman College (1-3) of Walla Walla, Wash. The Tritons (2-1) had six players in double figures, including Cari Young with 11 points and Tracy Ragatz, Nancy Caparaz, Bernadette Diepenbrock and Kathleen Alvarez with 10 each.
