THE PREPS : Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Estancia Wins Title at Garden Grove

Mike Curtis paced a balanced Estancia High School scoring attack with 17 points to lead the Eagles to an 80-37 victory over Magnolia in the final of the Garden Grove tournament Friday at Garden Grove High School.

Curtis, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, was among five Eagles in double figures. Paul McDaniel and Tim Kjar scored 15 points each, Andy Scholes added 13 and Brian Bradley 11 points for Estancia (4-0).

Magnolia (3-2) made only 3 of 24 shots in the first half as Estancia built a 39-12 halftime lead. The Eagles, who made 6 of their 7 3-point shots in the half, were led by Curtis with 14 points and Tim Kjar with 10.

Estancia, which scored the game’s first 4 points, saw Magnolia come as close as 8-6 before the Eagles scored 10 unanswered points to end the first quarter with an 18-6 lead.

Augustin Heredia, Curtis and Brian Bradley opened the second period with 3-pointers as Estancia outscored Magnolia, 10-1, to take a 28-7 lead with 4 minutes left.

Richard McKee was Magnolia’s leading scorer with 12 points.

In other Garden Grove tournament games:

Western 66, Loara 50--Joe Romero scored 18 points to lead Western (3-1) in the third-place game. Romero had two 3-point baskets in the first quarter as Western built a 21-10 lead. Tes Whitlock had 19 for Loara (2-2).

Pacifica 86, Bolsa Grande 42--Jason Brodowski scored 23 points for Pacifica (2-2) in the consolation championship. Mike Maher had 13 rebounds and Bill Maurer 11 assists for Pacifica.

Fullerton 60, Garden Grove 41--Curtis Morris scored 23 points and had 13 rebounds, and Lee Green 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Fullerton (1-3) in the seventh-place game. Joe Squyres 17 for Garden Grove (0-3).
