Roundup : Scoring for Everybody as Kearny Rips Hoover

The reserve boys’ basketball players for Kearny High School saw lots of action Thursday night during a 78-47 nonleague victory over Hoover at Kearny.

“We got some pretty balanced scoring by everyone,” Kearny Coach Bill Peterson said.

Scoring in double figures for Kearny were Billy Bejarino 15, Andre White 12, Tom Rawlins 11, Carlos Morgan 10 and Mike Oviedo 10.

Kearny improved to 5-3. Hoover is 0-6.

Bracy Simmons led Hoover with 19 points.

In other nonleague games:

Elsinore 59, Ramona 48--Mike Barber scored 25 points to lead visiting Elsinore (7-2). Ramona, which fell behind, 19-9, after the first quarter, was led by Tony Newman, who had 20 points. The Bulldogs (2-5) also got 11 from Nate Hollingsworth.

Lincoln 96, Central (El Centro) 53--Joe Temple scored 27 points to lead Lincoln (6-1) at home. Aaron Wilhite added 23 points for Lincoln, which led, 25-11, after the first quarter.

Irvine tournament

Santa Ana 53, Fallbrook 50--Fallbrook was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament and dropped to 3-4. Rob Crisel, Travis Teagle, Darnell Lee and Jorge Rodriguez all scored nine points in the loss. Santa Ana is 5-2.

Girls’ basketball

Metro Conference

Coronado 46, Montgomery 34--Julie Lochte scored 11 points and Christina De Jesus and Ijnanya Roberts had 10 apiece to lead host Coronado (7-5, 1-2). Montgomery led, 22-16, at halftime before Coronado rallied, outscoring Montgomery, 18-4, in the fourth quarter. “We made some adjustments and toughened up our defense,” Coronado Coach Ernie Dickerson said. “It took us a half to get into the game.”

Southwest 50, Mar Vista 48--Michelle Mendoza hit 2 free throws with 8 seconds remaining to give Southwest a four-point lead, and the host Raiders hung on. Toni Beckham led Southwest with 16 points. Nicki Meyer scored 12 points for Mar Vista (5-6, 2-1), which led, 31-28, at halftime.

Sweetwater 56, Marian 30--Nancy Magana had 16 points to lead host Sweetwater to its first conference victory. Red Devil teammate Meme Jones added 14 points and 12 steals for Sweetwater (2-5, 1-1). Katrina Baca had eight rebounds. Laura Cisneros scored 15 points for Marian (0-2 in conference).

Nonleague

Patrick Henry 71, Kearny 32--Sorii Epps and Rochelle Johnson had 20 points apiece as Parick Henry (5-0) rolled over visiting Kearny (2-4). Trenice Bell added 12 points for the Patriots. Johnson also had 17 rebounds.

Our Lady of Peace 50, La Jolla Country Day 31--Debbie Traveres scored a game high 16 points to lead OLP over host La Jolla Country Day (4-3).
