College Basketball Roundup : Lebo Makes Himself at Home in Tar Heel Win

A sellout crowd turned out at Hershey, Pa., Thursday night to see the hometown favorite, and he didn’t disappoint them.

Jeff Lebo, from nearby Carlisle, Pa., hit a pair of 3-point shots to ignite a 17-3 first-half run by No. 8-ranked North Carolina as the Tar Heels routed Towson State, 102-74.

Lebo scored 14 first-half points for the Tar Heels, who led, 48-30, at halftime. He finished with 19 to lead North Carolina (10-1).

“We could have come in and scored inside anytime we wanted, but they were very unselfish looking for me,” Lebo said. “Coming in I wasn’t gonna shoot any more, or do anything different than usual.”

Lebo also expressed his gratitude to Towson State, which was the home team in this game played about 80 miles from its suburban Baltimore campus, but only 30 miles from Lebo’s home.

“I’d like to thank Coach (Terry) Truax for scheduling the game, having us come up here and doing such a nice thing for me.”

Kurk Lee scored 22 points for Towson State (5-3).

North Carolina guard Kevin Madden suffered a hip-pointer late in the first half and did not return to action. Also, center Scott Williams sprained an ankle 4 minutes into the second half and sat out the rest of the game.

Arizona St. 121, Washington 90--Alex Austin scored 18 of his career-high 27 points in the second half as the Sun Devils (6-2, 1-1) routed the Huskies (3-4, 0-2) in a Pacific 10 game at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils’ point total set an arena record for the Activity Center, which opened in 1974. The previous Arizona State mark was 115 in a win over Portland State on Jan. 4, 1977.

Washington was coming off the worst loss in its history, a 116-61 trouncing by Arizona at Tucson Tuesday night.

Oklahoma 115, Arkansas Little Rock 96--Tyrone Jones made 7 of 9 3-point shots and Stacey King scored 31 points as the No. 7 Sooners (8-1) beat the Trojans (6-3) at Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma broke open a close game midway through the second half with a 25-7 spurt that was highlighted by 4 3-pointers from Jones, who finished with 28 points.

Oklahoma topped the 100-point mark for the sixth straight game.

Illinois 127, Louisiana State 100--Kendall Gill scored 27 points and Lowell Hamilton added 24 to lead the fifth-ranked Illini (9-0) over the Tigers (4-3) at Baton Rogue, La., in the first meeting ever between the two schools.

LSU’s Ricky Blanton led all scorers with 29 points. Chris Jackson, who became the first freshman to score 53 points in an NCAA Division I game (Dec. 10 against Florida), scored 27 points for the Tigers before fouling out with 8:52 to play.

St. Mary’s 95, New Hampshire 56--Robert Haugen scored 20 points and James Dailey added 18 to lead the Gaels (9-0) over the Penmen (1-7) at Moraga, Calif.

St. Mary’s entered the game ranked third in the nation in field-goal percentage at 57.9%. The Gaels shot 55.6% and outrebounded New Hampshire, 44-24.

Ohio State 92, Kent State 67--Grady Mateen scored all 11 of his points in the second half and 4 other Ohio State players scored in double figures as the 12th-ranked Buckeyes (7-2) won at Columbus, Ohio.

Michigan St. 91, E. Michigan 76--Steve Smith scored 25 points and Ken Redfield added 21 at East Lansing, Mich., as the Spartans (7-0) downed the Hurons (6-2) to give Michigan State its best start in 4 seasons.

La Salle 79, Villanova 74--Lionel Simmons had 18 points and 21 rebounds and Doug Overton hit 2 free throws with 23 seconds remaining in overtime as the Explorers (7-1) won at Villanova, Pa.

La Salle’s Craig Conlin had 20 points, including a crucial 3-point play with 1:23 left in regulation.

The Wildcats are 6-4.

N. Carolina St. 100, Coppin St. 67--Rodney Monroe scored 24 points to lead the No. 17 Wolfpack (4-1) over the Eagles (3-4) at Raleigh, N.C.

Seton Hall 64, Princeton 46--John Morton scored 16 points and Darryl Walker 15 as the 15th-ranked Pirates (10-0) used a 13-3 run that spanned the first and second halves at South Orange, N.J., to pull away from the Tigers (5-2).

Vanderbilt 92, Dartmouth 67--Barry Booker scored a career-high 25 points and handed out 11 assists as the Commodores (5-5) beat the Big Green (5-3) at Nashville, Tenn.

Georgia 65, Alabama 60--Alec Kessler scored 19 points and Litterial Green added 14 and each hit 2 clutch free throws in the final minute as the Bulldogs (7-2) beat the Crimson Tide (7-2) at Athens, Ga.

West Virginia 82, NC Charlotte 73--Herbie Brooks and Steve Berger combined for 11 points in overtime, lifting the Mountaineers (5-2) past the 49ers (4-1) at Charlotte, N.C.

Air Force 91, Portland 66--Ray Dudley scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Falcons (7-2) over the Pilots (0-9) at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Dudley, who was averaging 26.4 points coming into the game, sank 14 of 20 shots, including 6 3-pointers.

Pacific 108, UC San Diego 85--Guard Reggie Ricks scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (4-4) over the Toreros (3-5) at Stockton.
