In other Avocado League games:

El Camino 71, Ramona 59--Glenn Ankton and Shawn Scurry scored 18 points apiece and Travis Gibson added 16 to lead visiting El Camino, which led, 44-32, at halftime. Tony Newman scored 21 points and had 15 rebounds for Ramona (3-8, 0-1).

Rancho Buena Vista 66, Carlsbad 51--Darryl Parker scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Rancho Buena Vista (5-7, 1-0). The Longhorns also received 14 points from Todd Fellars, 12 points and 10 assists from James Lewis, and 11 points and 9 rebounds from Greg Porter.

In Palomar League games:

Poway 73, Orange Glen 57--Adam Jones scored 20 points and Jay Blankenbeckler added 17 as visiting Poway (12-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten. Orange Glen (4-9, 0-1) led at halftime, 28-25, but Poway took control with a 23-11 run in the third quarter.

Gabby Awbrey had 14 points for Poway. Shawn Macklin of Orange Glen led all scorers with 25 points.

San Dieguito 52, Vista 40--Matt de la Pena scored 29 points and San Dieguito hit 13 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off host Vista. Brian Malewicz added 10 points for San Dieguito (7-6, 1-0), which led by only 3 points (41-38) with 3 minutes left.

Herbie Weston scored 15 points to lead Vista (4-9, 0-1).

Mt. Carmel 57, Fallbrook 53--Mike Graves scored 16 points and made 4 free throws in the final 9 seconds to give host Mt. Carmel (9-4, 1-0) the victory.

Mt. Carmel trailed, 53-51, before Shane Knight scored on a layup with 9 seconds left to tie the game. Fallbrook then inbounded the ball and called a time out, but the Warriors had no time outs remaining and were assesed a technical foul.

Graves made the 2 ensuing free throws and then 2 more after he was fouled trying to run out the clock.

In Metro Conference games:

Castle Park 79, Montgomery 29--Gerardo Gomez scored a game-high 16 points to lead Castle Park (2-10). Castle Park led, 39-14, at halftime. Montgomery is 0-8.

Southwest 51, Chula Vista 41--Southwest outscored Chula Vista, 14-7, in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory. Will Tate and Adalberto Silva led the Raiders with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Hilltop 50, Mar Vista 48--Josh Wenning’s basket with 4 seconds remaining gave visiting Hilltop a come-from-behind win.

Mar Vista (1-11, 0-3) led, 14-4, after one quarter but couldn’t hang on despite Coit Valentine’s 14 points. Malcolm McCurty led Hilltop with 13 points and hit a 3-pointer to tie the game in the final minute.

In nonleague games:

USDHS 52, Mira Mesa 49--Using a mixture of zone and man-to-man full-court pressure, USDHS (6-3) rallied from 12-point deficit to tie Mira Mesa, 44-44, at the end of regulation. In overtime, Mira Mesa’s Marc Ziegler (14 points) scored first. The Dons’ Peter Ellis (13 points) came back with a layup, Anthony Massa (19 points) had a steal and a layup and each hit free throws to give USDHS the victory.

Point Loma 69, Hoover 45--Point Loma outscored Hoover, 37-15, in the second and third periods as the Pointers rolled to their second victory of the year over Hoover. Six-foot seven-inch center Jim Griffin led Point Loma with 17 points. John Akridge and Roger Blake scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Cardinals.

In girls’ nonleague basketball:

La Jolla 59, Madison 25--This game actually had a tie score, 19-19, late in the second quarter. Then, La Jolla outscored the Warhawks, 40-6, the rest of the way. Nicole Anderson scored 26 points, including 2 3-pointers.

Patrick Henry 51, USDHS 47--Trailing, 47-46, with 1 minute 30 seconds remaining, Patrick Henry scored 5 unanswered points to defeat the Dons. Rachelle Johnson (16 points, 16 rebounds) scored 2 field goals and Sorri Epps (21 points, 11 rebounds) made a free throw to pace the comeback.
