Tie Keeps Mission Viejo’s Soccer Streak Alive

The Mission Viejo High School girls’ soccer team had to rally in the final 5 minutes Thursday for a 2-2 tie with Dana Hills, extending the Diablos’ unbeaten streak to 80 games.

Mission Viejo is 75-0-5 in the past 4 years. The streak is a national record.

Dana Hills, ranked third in the Southern Section 4-A, led, 2-1, with 5 minutes left on a pair of goals by Stacey Juhl. But Mission Viejo’s Maggie Doherty scored off a corner kick by Jennifer Ward to tie the score.

Mission Viejo (10-0-1, 0-0-1), the top-ranked team in the 4-A, took a 1-0 lead 9 minutes into the game on a goal by Kenna Burtell off a pass from Jenny Delp. Dana Hills (10-2-4, 0-0-1) tied the score midway through the first half when Juhl scored on a pass from Jane Deffenbaugh.

Juhl scored on a pass from Amy Kroeger with 10 minutes left in the match to give the Dolphins a 2-1 lead.

Goalie Karla Gunderson made 15 saves for Dana Hills. Tamar deFries made 9 saves for Mission Viejo.
