Southern Section Boys’ Basketball : Camarillo’s Balance Overtakes Westlake

Four Camarillo High players scored in double figures to lead the Scorpions to a 66-62 win over Westlake in a Marmonte League game Friday at Westlake.

Scott Foster and David Harbour each scored 13 points, and Rick Schnell and Jason Hunt added 12 each. Foster, who also grabbed 13 rebounds, had the added responsibility of guarding Kurt Schwan, Westlake’s 6-8 center. Foster limited Schwan, who had been averaging more than 20 points a game, to 11.

Camarillo (10-3) has won 4 consecutive games and 7 of its last 8. The Scorpions finished the first half with a 13-2 run to lead, 37-24, and the Warriors (8-6, 1-1) were never able to challenge.

Simi Valley 60, Thousand Oaks 58--Steve Carnes’ 15-foot jump shot from the left of the free throw line with 2 seconds left lifted Simi Valley to its fourth consecutive win and second in a row in Marmonte League play.

Jeff Marciano led Simi Valley (9-5) with 19 points. The Pioneers outscored the Lancers (6-7), 20-3, at the outset, but Thousand Oaks retaliated with a 27-7 burst of its own. Jeff Peterson scored 27 points for the Lancers.

Royal 65, Channel Islands 61--Senior guard J.P. Ouellette scored all 4 overtime points to lead Royal past Channel Islands. Ouellette, who scored a game-high 22 points, also tied the game with 5 seconds left in regulation with 2 free throws.

Royal’s Russell Myers scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds, and Clint Guy added 13 points.

St. John Bosco 49, Crespi 45--John Metoyer hit 2 free throws with 4 seconds left to ice the Del Rey league game for St. John Bosco.

Trailing, 47-45, Crespi (6-8, 1-1) set up a 3-point shot for Pat Brady, but he missed with 10 seconds left and Metoyer was fouled on the rebound. Ken Lynch led Crespi with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Notre Dame 82, Harvard 60--Brian Jones and Kenny Hicks combined for 50 points to lead the Knights in their inaugural San Fernando Valley League game at Harvard. Notre Dame jumped out to a 26-16 lead after the first quarter.

Mike Beckwith took team-high honors for the Saracens with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Rick Osterloh scored 15 points and dealt out 8 assists in the losing cause.

Bell-Jeff 80, La Salle 52--Nick Sanderson scored a game-high 28 points and the Guards outscored La Salle, 23-12, in the third quarter in the San Fernando Valley League opener at Bell-Jeff.

Chris Dyer added 12 points and 9 assists for Bell-Jeff (13-1), and Ray Witt scored 10 points--all in the first half.

Faith Baptist 77, Campbell Hall 56--Fernando Garcia scored 12 of his 20 points in the second quarter to help the Contenders blow open the Delphic League game at Campbell Hall.

Leading, 15-10, after the first quarter, Faith Baptist (10-1, 2-0) outscored Campbell Hall, 21-9, in the second period.

Point guard David Hairston scored a game-high 26 points for Faith Baptist. Ty Leatherman led Campbell Hall with 18 points.

L.A. Baptist 66, Montclair Prep 47--Dave Garcia scored a game-high 19 points and had 10 assists, and Brett Craig had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Knights (11-3, 1-0) won their Alpha League opener at home.

Montclair Prep (10-5), down by 4 at intermission, was outscored by 17 in the second half. J. T. Billingslea led the Mounties with 15 points.

Canyon 64, Antelope Valley 48--Darren Oldenberg scored 19 points--12 from 3-point range--to lead the Cowboys’ upset in the Golden League opener at Canyon.

Burroughs 73, San Gabriel 49--Tom Clemons scored a game-high 19 points and Marnie Calderon and Richie Sandoval each scored 10 points in Burroughs’ Foothill League opener at San Gabriel.

Dan Murphy added 9 points and had 6 rebounds for Burroughs (9-5).

Hart 33, Alhambra 26--Employing a stall throughout the first half, Alhambra led, 4-2, in the Foothill League opener at Hart.

Hart outscored Alhambra, 31-22, in the second half, however.

Hart’s Brett Wilson had 23 points, including 17 free throws, and was the only player in the game to score in double figures.
