Scott Campbell scored a school-record 53 points to lead La Quinta High School to a 92-63 victory over Bolsa Grande Monday in a Garden Grove League boys’ basketball game at La Quinta.

Campbell broke John Rogers’ school record of 52 set in 1981 and tied the fourth highest single-game performance in Orange County history.

Tim Gergen of Rancho Alamitos (1966), Tom Lewis of Mater Dei (1983) and Mike Goff of Magnolia (1987) also scored 53 points in a game. Arthur Worthy of Huntington Beach holds the county record of 58 points, set in 1910.

“At halftime I thought I had 18 or 20 points, just a regular game for me,” said Campbell, a 6-foot 5-inch senior forward. “Then someone told me I had 35 and I started thinking that Johnny’s record was only 52. So I kept shooting and the ball kept going in.”

Campbell made 17 of 29 shots, including 8 of 9 3-pointers. He left the game with more than 5 minutes left.

It was Campbell’s seventh consecutive game in which he has scored at least 30 points. He is averaging 34.6 points per game this season, tops in Orange County.

“Things have been going well lately,” Campbell said. “I have to give the credit to my point guards. They’ve been getting me the ball in good position to score.”

Bill Snyder added 13 points and 12 assists for La Quinta.

La Quinta (8-4 overall, 3-0 in league) led, 27-17, at the end of the first quarter and 48-31 at halftime.
