Girls’ Soccer Roundup : Sunny Hills Edges Sonora on Gugler’s Goal

Freshman Heidi Gugler scored to break a 1-1 tie and give Sunny Hills High School a 2-1 victory over Sonora in a Freeway League girls’ soccer match Thursday at Sonora.

Angela Macintosh had the other goal for Sunny Hills (8-3-1 overall, 2-1 in league play). Senior goalie Erica Gugler, Heidi’s sister, had 11 saves.

Tami Taber scored for Sonora (1-1-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 1, Kennedy 0--Sheryl Jones scored a second-half goal on an assist by Robin Karnes at Kennedy. Karnes’ one-touch pass from 30 yards out allowed Jones to go 1-on-1 with the goalie and helped La Quinta improve to 8-2, 2-0. Wendy Wilson had 4 saves for the shutout.

Pacifica 6, Rancho Alamitos 1--Devon Fitzpatrick scored 2 goals to lead host Pacifica (4-1-1, 2-0). Noelle Rost, Kara Jewett, April Burton and Karen Wleklinski also scored for Pacifica.

In the Olympic League:

St. Margaret’s 14, Brethren 0--Shelley Lyons and Rachael Frugard scored 4 goals each for host St. Margaret’s (1-5-2, 1-2-2), which set a single-game school record for goals. Wendy Brown and Ashley Wacholder each scored twice and Lisa Frisco added a goal for St. Margaret’s. Brethren kicked the ball into its net for the final goal.

Whittier Christian 2, Orange Lutheran 0--Suzanne Brown scored a goal in each half for host Whittier Christian (4-8, 2-3). Orange Lutheran is 2-7-1, 0-4-1.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 1, Anaheim 0--Kristina Yoseloff scored late in the second half for host Valencia (4-4-1, 2-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 2, Laguna Beach 0--Stacy Long and Debbie Ford scored for visiting Orange (6-0-2, 2-0).

Woodbridge 2, Laguna Hills 1--Tina Hall scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick with 3 minutes to play for the Warriors at home. Suzie Baldwin also scored for Woodbridge (6-7-1 overall, 1-0 in league). Laya Dogmetchie had 4 saves in the victory.

Kelly Besser scored 10 minutes into the second half for Laguna Hills (0-1 in league).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 1, Newport Harbor 0--Prentice Perkins scored with 5 minutes left for host Corona del Mar (9-5-2, 1-1). Kim Kolstat had 4 saves for Corona del Mar. Newport Harbor is 5-6, 0-2.

University 9, Saddleback 0--Inge Haskins, Sandra Brishka and Julie Simpson each scored twice and Shana Novegrod, Liz Dale and Stacy McGinley each had one goal to lead host University (6-6-0, 2-0). Saddleback (0-2) did not have a shot on goal.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 2, San Clemente 0--Megan Fosberg scored 2 goals in the first 15 minutes for Dana Hills (12-2-4, 2-0-1). San is 6-7-2, 1-2-0.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 1, Edison 0--Melanie Frakes scored late in the second half for host Marina (9-5-2, 3-0-1), which was tied for first with Edison (8-6-1, 2-1-1) going into the match.
