Orange Glen’s Nyberg Picks San Diego State

Jake Nyberg, Orange Glen High School’s record-breaking wide receiver, has announced he will sign a national letter of intent to attend San Diego State University.

Nyberg (6-feet 1-inch, 180 pounds) follows teammate Cree Morris, a quarterback who verbally committed to the Aztecs last month, and Orange Glen’s former coach, Dave Lay, who was named SDSU’s offensive coordinator.

Said Nyberg, “I just couldn’t find any disadvantages. Everything is so perfect. They’ve got Cree and Coach there, so everything seemed perfect.”

The No. 1 receiver in the state, Nyberg caught 93 passes for 1,456 yards this season. His 93 catches broke the San Diego Section record of 91 (set by Fallbrook’s Bill Dunckel in 1986). And his yardage was second to Jay McNabney of Carlsbad, who had 1,734 receiving yards in 1980.

Nyberg’s best game was probably his last. He caught 12 passes for 207 yards in Orange Glen’s 31-28 loss to Morse in the Class 3-A final in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Quarterback John Lynch, whose senior season at Torrey Pines High School was limited to five quarters because of a broken ankle, verbally committed to play football as well as baseball at Stanford.

Lynch had narrowed his choices to Stanford and Washington State before making his decision Monday night.

“When I went down with the broken ankle,” he said, “I thought it was over. Most of the colleges I talked with checked with their team doctors, and they said I could come back 100% from the injury, but I was still pretty scared.”

Lynch, who passed for 1,292 yards out of an option offense his junior year, was limited to 346 yards his senior season, after Torrey Pines had switched offenses to accentuate his skills.
