Calderon Catches Fire From 3-Point Range

Share

Burroughs junior point guard Marnie Calderon is making a point of shooting from 3-point territory.

Calderon (5-foot-8, 130 pounds) has made 36 of 73 shots (49.3%) from behind the 19-foot, 9-inch line, including 16 in 5 league games and 20 in the past 6 games.

Calderon, who averages 11.9 points a game, twice has made 4 3-point baskets in a game.

“He’s really come on,” Coach Ira Sollod said. “He was only a fair shooter last year. This year, he’s really confident; 18, 19 feet, he’s pretty tough.”

Scoring: Hart’s Micah Ohlman is shooting 44% (18 of 41) from 3-point territory. Ohlman also is Hart’s leading free-throw shooter (76%). . . . J. P. Ouellette, Royal’s leading scorer at 19.1 points a game, broke out of a season-long shooting slump Friday in the Highlanders’ 59-58 win over Thousand Oaks. After making just 37% of his field-goal attempts in the first 17 games, Ouellette scored 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He made 4 of 5 3-point shots and 6 of 6 free throws and also had 6 assists.

Simi Valley has made 45.5% of its field-goal attempts but has improved that mark to 48.4% in Marmonte League play. A reason is the accuracy of center Mike Wawryk and forward Dennis Cook. Wawryk has made 26 of 37 shots against league opponents and Cook has made 15 of 20. Jeff Marciano’s game against Camarillo last week didn’t hurt the percentage. The senior guard made 9 of 11 field-goal attempts, including both tries from 3-point land, and 8 of 9 free throws en route to 28 points. The Pioneers made 21 of 37 field-goal attempts and 25 of 30 free throws.

Records: The Brent Lofton countdown continues at El Camino Real. The senior forward now has 809 career points, 15 shy of Sean Davis’ record of 824. Assistant Jeff Davis says that he cannot help looking beyond that mark, too. “If we stick around long enough in the playoffs, he could reach 1,000,” Jeff Davis said.

With victories against Sylmar and Van Nuys last week, Reseda (6-8, 4-1) has won more league games this season than in the previous 2 combined. Playing in the Valley 4-A League, Reseda had a combined league record of 3-21 the past 2 years.

Channel Islands has lost 10 consecutive basketball games, including its first 6 Marmonte games.

Extra points: Reseda’s Coley Kyman is averaging 10.2 rebounds a game, but he has 58 rebounds in the past 4 games for an average of 14.5. . . . El Camino Real senior center Jason Steele blocked 5 shots in the first quarter of Friday’s game against San Fernando and has 37 this season (3.1 average).
