Julie Tingle has found that it is better to give than to receive. A senior halfback for the powerful Agoura High girls’ soccer team, Tingle last week became the Southern Section’s MGP--Most Generous Player--when she notched her 91st career assist.

The assist eclipsed the record of 90, set by Kristin Harkins of La Quinta from 1983-87, and helped the Chargers (19-0, 7-0 in Frontier League play) to their 34th consecutive victory, a 9-0 wipeout of Santa Clara.

“It means a lot to me, but I don’t let records get to me,” Tingle said.

Oh, but they do. In fact, they seem to cling to Tingle like socks to a sweater after 30 minutes on tumble dry.

For the record . . .

Tingle registered 33 assists last season to set a single-season school record. With 32 this season, she undoubtedly will soon break that mark.

As a freshman, she set the current Frontier League high jump record of 5 feet, 4 inches.

Her track time of 12.1 in the 100 meters is a Frontier record.

Tingle’s time of 26.4 in the 200 meters is a school record.

She contributed to school-record performances in the 400-meter relay and the mile relay.

And if that is not enough, Tingle has set her sights on the school record in the 300 low hurdles.

“I’m only two-tenths of a second away,” said Tingle, who added that she is having trouble deciding whether to pursue soccer or track in college.

Tingle was not aware that she was closing in on the assist record until she was within 10 of the mark.

“I tried to keep it a secret from her for about 10 days,” Agoura Coach Dave Godwin said. “Then we told her and she decided to go for it.”

The record-breaker came Friday. She zipped the ball to teammate Kelly McDonald, who booted the ball into the net and Tingle’s name into Southern Section history.

Said Godwin of Tingle: “She’s a particularly unselfish player. That’s what impresses me most.”

Only now, her unselfishness is a matter of record.
