Marina High School has named defensive coordinator John Seeley as its head football coach.

Seeley replaces Chris Ramsey who, in three seasons, compiled a 6-25 record and led the Vikings to the Sunset League title in 1986. Marina was 1-9 last season.

Ramsey, who does not have a permanent teaching contract with the Huntington Beach Union High School District, learned in December that the district would not be rehiring any of its temporary teachers in 1989.

“Chris thought that since it was questionable whether he would be around, it was best for all involved for him to step down and let us go on with more stability,” Athletic Director Larry Doyle said. Ramsey is applying for positions in California and in his home state of Michigan.

Principal Ira Toibin, activities director Dave Thompson, district athletic director Bill Boswell and Doyle selected Seeley after interviews Thursday. Doyle would not say who else was interviewed for the job.

“We picked John because we feel he is what the program needs right now,” Doyle said. “He is very hard worker. He gets along super with the players. He is a real tough and demanding-type guy, yet he does all the work. He is not the type to tell kids to do something and not do anything himself. He is a good leader by example.”
