Community College Roundup : Cypress Wins King’s River Tournament

Cypress College worked its way out of the losers’ bracket to win the King’s River baseball tournament Sunday at King’s River College.

The Chargers (10-4) defeated Santa Rose, 5-1, in seven innings to win the championship. Jim Short hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to lead Cypress. Short was the tournament’s most valuable player.

Dennis Burbank pitched five innings for the victory. Burbank (3-1) struck out eight while allowing only four hits before giving way to Ken Dren, who went the final two innings for the save.

Earlier in the day, the Chargers had defeated Santa Rosa, 9-1.

Jason Friedman hit a grand slam in the sixth to spark the Chargers. Short drove in two runs. Rich Lodding (2-2) went eight innings, striking out 15, for the victory.

In the Modesto tournament:

Merced 10, Fullerton 5--Brian Havel hit two home runs as Merced defated Fullerton in the winners’ bracket final at Modesto College. Joey Parga had three hits and three RBIs and Rob Bailey had three hits for Fullerton (3-5). Fullerton plays Modesto in the losers’ bracket final today, with the winner playing Merced for the championship.
