THE COLLEGES : Roundup : Titans Top Loyola in Baseball, 7-6
Brent Mayne, Rod Klopfer and Paul Bunch hit solo home runs to lead Cal State Fullerton over Loyola Marymount, 7-6, in a nonconference baseball game at Loyola Thursday.
Fullerton (6-4) led, 7-4, before giving up two runs in the ninth. Titan first baseman Rex Peters had two singles to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
In another nonconference baseball game:
UC Irvine 5, Cal State Los Angeles 1--Junior right-hander Ken Whitworth pitched his second consecutive complete game as the Anteaters (5-7-1) ran their winning streak to three games.
In men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 5, Pepperdine 2--No. 2 singles Mark Kaplan beat Tomar Zimmerman, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the National Indoor team tennis championships in Louisville. Kaplan teamed with Richard Lubner to clinch the Anteaters’ victory, defeating David Wells-Roth and Mark Hanson, 6-1, 6-1, in doubles.
In the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships:
UC Irvine’s Brian Carey won the 1-meter diving with 391.40 points.
