Community College Roundup : Fullerton Starts Fast, Wins Big

Fullerton College’s John Mele hit a triple with two men on and then scored on a wild pitch to put the Hornets ahead 3-0 after one inning on the way to a 10-1 nonconference baseball victory over Los Angeles Harbor Thursday.

Willy Speakman homered in the seventh inning, and Rob Bailey stole home with two outs in the eight to make the score 5-1 after eight innings. Fullerton scored five runs in the ninth to put the game away.

Hornet pitcher Robert Lee picked up his first victory, pitching the fourth through sixth innings, striking out two and walking five.

In women’s softball:

Rancho Santiago 4, Southwestern 0--Rancho Santiago scored all four runs in the sixth to win the nonconference game. With bases loaded and one out, Kim Wolf stole home. La Tania Trotter’s double scored two more runs to make it 3-0, and Yvonne Rodriguez singled in Trotter. Natalie Sanchez (6-2) pitched the seven innings for her first shutout. Rancho Santiago is 6-2.

Orange Coast 12, Citrus 1--The Pirates’ Valerie Azhocar went two for four, including a double, with two RBIs. Teammate Wendy Robinson added two hits and an RBI. The Pirates (4-2) broke the game open with a seven-run fourth. Citrus dropped to 4-3.

In men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 6, Long Beach 3--No. 3 singles Ilkyung Choi and No. 5 Steve Lord won their singles matches and teamed to win the third doubles match to pace Orange Coast (3-1) in a nonconference match.

In women’s tennis:

Golden West College 8, Palomar 1--Golden West’s Eileen Robertson defeated Patti Cornelius, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and the Rustlers swept all three doubles matches to improve to 3-0 after beating the state’s top-ranked team, Grossmont, earlier this week.

Cypress 7, Long Beach 2--Cypress’ No. 1 singles, Loretta Fleming, defeated Robin Sanford, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 2 singles Kim Fabbri defeated Anna Miller, 6-3, 7-6. All three doubles teams won for the Chargers (3-0).

Rancho Santiago 7, Mt. San Antonio 2--Rancho won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and swept the doubles. No. 1 singles Teri Eggers defeated Katie Hibbard, 6-4, 6-2 for Rancho (4-0).
