Meek, San Pasqual Upset Second-Seeded El Camino

Erik Meek topped all scorers with 23 points to lead San Pasqual (13-11) to a 66-59 upset of second-seeded El Camino (20-6) Thursday night at El Camino in the boys’ section Division II basketball playoffs.

“We felt real confident because we beat them in league once,” San Pasqual Coach Tom Buck said. “It was the greatest game we’ve played by far.”

Meek also grabbed 24 rebounds and had seven blocks.

El Camino, led by Travis Gilley with 21 points, sunk itself in the second quarter, converting just two of 16 from the field.

Brian Banner scored 14 for San Pasqual, which will play Madison in the quarterfinals.

In other boys’ games:

Division I second round

Poway 89, Hilltop 46--Adam Jones made 13 of 16 field goals to lead host and top-seeded Poway with 27 points. Gabby Awbrey added 20 points and had eight rebounds for the Titans (20-4), who shot 39 of 70 (55%) from the field.

Granite Hills 74, Morse 59--John Russell scored 22 points as host Granite Hills (18-8) defeated Morse (10-13) to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal game against Poway. Mark Phillips had 13 points and eight assists for Granite Hills.

San Diego 62, San Dieguito 51--Clark James scored a game-high 28 and had 15 rebounds to lead San Diego, which struggled early against inspired San Dieguito. San Diego (18-4) started the second half in a full-court press and took command. Matt de la Pena led San Dieguito with 27.

Division II second round

Crawford 54, Mission Bay 52--Chris Johnson, a 6-foot-2 senior, came out of a scramble with the ball and made a five-foot hook shot at the buzzer to give eighth-seeded Crawford (17-8) the victory and the right to play top-seeded Torrey Pines in the quarterfinals.

It was the first playoff game at Crawford in 16 years.

Johnson finished with a game-high 29 points.

Mission Bay’s Brian Sorenson had made a 25-foot three-pointer to tie the game, 52-52, with 12 seconds left.

Torrey Pines 71, Escondido 50--The Falcons, top-ranked by both the Times’ and in the playoff draw, were trailing, 27-16, with 4:16 left in the second quarter when Torrey Pines Coach John Farrell called a timeout and changed personnel. The Falcons inched their way back and Chris Stevens’ tip-in with 36 seconds remaining in the half gave them a 32-30 lead. Torrey Pines (28-1) extended in the fourth quarter, outscoring Escondido, 24-5. Courtie Miller (27) and Kevin Flanagan (19) led the Falcons. Chris Heintschel (16) and Brooks Barnhard (14) led Escondido (13-12).

Division V quarterfinals

Bishop’s 55, Midway Baptist 38--Bishop’s won easily with balanced scoring from Bill Assaf, Mark Sottosanti and Brian Aalbers, who scored 10 points apiece. Bishop’s (21-2) led by as much as 30 in the second half. Midway Baptist finished 15-9.

Calipatria 65, La Jolla Country Day 56--Mike Moss scored 16 points and Enrique Barraza 13 to lead Calipatria (16-7). Victor Chang scored 11 for La Jolla Country Day (16-10). Calipatria led, 33-14, at the half.

Imperial 67, Francis Parker 51--Fabian Diaz scored 16 points and Brian Williams 13 to lead Imperial (12-9). Francis Parker finished 19-5.

Girls

Division I second round

Point Loma 85, Mt. Miguel 22--Monica Filer outscored Mt. Miguel herself with 25, Chris Drumm added 18 and Tyeast Brown had 13. Filer had 16 assists for top-ranked Point Loma (27-1), which led 42-14 at halftime. Mt. Miguel finished 7-18.

Chula Vista 54, Southwest 52--The visiting Raiders (14-13) were down by seven points with 38 seconds remaining, then pulled to within 53-52 with 6 seconds to play. But Southwest went for the 25-foot jump shot rather than going inside to the hoop and couldn’t connect, and the Spartans’ made a foul shot. Marcey Wolf led Chula Vista (13-12) with 25 points. Mesaga Johnson (19) and Tameeka Hall (18) paced Southwest.

Mt. Carmel 65, Morse 38--Heidi Piper scored 17 points, Vicki DeJesus 13 and Tara Schwerin 12 to lead Mt. Carmel (14-12). Morse (11-14) was led by Mulu Tosi’s 12 points.

Santana 75, Montgomery 24-- Rebecca Aase paced second-seeded Santana (22-2) at home. For the Sultans, Stephanie Thompson (14), Tammy Vates (12) and Leslie Moffet (10) were all in double figures. Aase had four assists and eight steals and Vates added 11 steals.

Division II second round

Vista 63, San Pasqual 41--At Vista, San Pasqual’s defense slowed the tempo and shut down everyone but Chris Enger, who scored 41 points and had 29 rebounds. For San Pasqual, Nicky Gannon had 22 points, three three-pointers and went 13 of 15 from the free-throw line. Vista improved to 23-2.

La Jolla 61, El Capitan 51--Hedvig Lindquist had 35 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals to lead La Jolla (19-7). Melissa Hadfield scored 16 points for El Capitan (9-16).

San Marcos 72, Serra 44--Suzie O’Brien’s 47 points paced host San Marcos (19-6), who opened the game up with a 23-6 third quarter performance. The Knights shot 50% from the field. Pam Ross led Serra with 20 points.

Division V quarterfinals

Marian 36, Julian 31--Laura Cisneros and Adanya Guevera led the host Crusaders (4-18) past Julian (11-11). Vicky Tetter led Julian with 25 points.

La Jolla Country Day 53, Borrego Springs 18--Robin Chatman and Edy Coleman led La Jolla Country Day (15-5) with 12 and 10 points. Borrego Springs finished 9-12.

Marian 57, Lutheran 40--The Crusaders (7-15) didn’t come near to equaling their 88-26 victory against Tri-City Christian Monday, but recorded strong first and fourth quarters for the victory at home. Jerry Conlin--10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter--and Teo Rosales led Marian with 25 and 16 points. Jeff Hooper paced Lutheran (15-8) with 19 points. Calipatria 37, Bishop’s 29--In a defensive struggle, Calipatria (12-8) led, 18-14, at the half. Bishop’s finished 9-9.
