THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Sweeps Past Santa Monica in Volleyball

Brian Lewis had 17 kills as Orange Coast College swept Santa Monica, 15-8, 15-1, 15-11, Friday in South Coast Conference volleyball at Santa Monica.

Kurt Dumm had nine kills and Scott Linquist eight for the Pirates (21-1 overall, 10-1 in conference play).

In other South Coast Conference play:

Golden West 3, El Camino 2--Mike Meyers had 21 kills to lead Golden West (8-2) to a 17-19, 7-15, 15-7, 15-6, 15-5 victory at El Camino. In nonconference men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 6, Mesa State (Colorado) 3--Eric Rebitzer defeated Kurt Tribelhorn, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the Pirates (10-2) at Orange Coast.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Orange Coast 375, Fullerton 404--Ted Garro shot a one-under par 70 for medalist honors to lead OCC at Western Hills Country Club in Chino. Frank Pantoja shot a 71 and Scott Watson shot a 75 to help the Pirates (14-2, 8-1).

In men’s swimming:

At the Cuesta Invitational: Wade Johnson of Orange Coast won the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:49.25) and Dave Stone won the 50 free (21.85) to lead Orange Coast in the first day of a two-day meet at Cuesta College. Diablo Valley leads the meet with 197 points, Golden West is second with 142, and Orange Coast third with 122.

In womens’ swimming:

At the Cuesta Invitational: Orange Coast’s Jennifer Hoy won the three-meter dive and the 400 medley relay won in 4:14.50, the top time in the state this year, to pace Orange Coast, which leads the two-day event with 171 points. Golden West is in second (108), and Diablo Valley third (102).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:

Saddleback 94, Rancho Santiago 54--Jason Holloway won the 100 meters (10.76) and the 200 (22.7), and Steve Dougherty won the shotput (52 feet) to lead the Gauchos (4-1) at Rancho Santiago.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:

Saddleback 88, Rancho Santiago 25--Corina Welier won the 800 meters (2:27.9) and the 400 hurdles (1:12) to lead the Gauchos (3-1) at Rancho Santiago.
