Baseball Roundup : Liberty Christian Scores 14 but Loses in 7th

Liberty Christian High School scored six runs in the seventh inning, then gave up five in the bottom of the inning and lost to Linfield, 15-14, Friday in a nonleague baseball game at Linfield.

Chris Buckels hit a three-run homer and John Van Dyke had a two-run homer in the seventh to give Liberty Christian a 14-10 lead.

Liberty Christian was one out away from the victory when Linfield began to rally. Linfield scored two runs and then loaded the bases. Rick Davenport hit a triple to left-center field for the game-winning hit.

Jim Rowe had four hits and three RBIs for Linfield. Rowe had a two-run homer in the fourth.

Dan Deaton had three hits and three RBIs for Liberty Christian.

In the Century League:

Canyon 18, El Modena 4--Senior Dan Puskas (2-0) struck out 11 and walked six and went three for three with a single, double and triple. He scored three runs and had five RBIs for Canyon (6-7, 1-2). Quenton Garcia hit a two-run home run in the second inning for Canyon. Cale Shepherd had a solo home run in the fourth for El Modena (2-1).

Foothill 8, Santa Ana 6--Todd Delnoce’s two-run single in the sixth inning put the Knights ahead, 8-5, at Santa Ana. Kent Donnelly got the victory with six strikeouts in seven innings for Foothill (9-4, 3-0). David Downs was two for four with two doubles and one RBI, and Eric Garcia went two for four with a double and two RBIs for the Knights. Julio Vargas went four for four with one home run and three RBIs for Santa Ana.

Villa Park 13, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kevin Ehl lost a no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for Villa Park (6-7 overall, 1-2 in league play). Ehl was one strike away from the no-hitter when Bryan Singleton doubled. The Spartans were led by Matt Genova, who hit a three-run homer in the third, and Chris Johnson, who had a solo home run in the fifth.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Brethren 0--Junior Kent Dowding (2-1) pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Lancers (5-6-1, 2-0) at home.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 9, Brea-Olinda 8 (8 innings)--Ryan Jara doubled home the winning run with one out in the top of the eighth for Anaheim (2-1 in league play). Rob Ferensik was three for four and an RBI for Brea (5-6, 1-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 7, Orange 6--Third baseman Joe Bennett drove in the tying and winning runs with a two-run single as Laguna Hills (11-3, 3-0) overcame a 6-3 deficit with a four-run sixth inning. Orange is 1-2 in league play.

Trabuco Hills 5, Costa Mesa 3--Trabuco Hills (6-3, 3-0) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Frank Waugh had a two-run double and David Lowery followed with a two-run homer.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 12, Newport Harbor 2--Mark Hartley had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles (8-5, 1-2) at Estancia. Marco Vazquez had three hits, an RBI and scored two runs for Estancia.

Saddleback 20, Corona del Mar 3--Harvey Perez had three hits and four RBIs for the Roadrunners (7-6, 3-0) at Saddleback. Jeff Blanco had three RBIs and George Canham three hits.

University 1, Tustin 0--Senior Jason Williams (1-5) helped stop a six-game losing streak for visiting University (4-8-1, 1-2). Tustin is 2-1 in league play.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 5, Irvine 2--Doug Bane hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead Capistrano Valley (1-1) at home. Scott Vollmer hit a solo home run in the fourth for Irvine (6-6, 1-1).

Dana Hills 5, San Clemente 3--Nathan Ure hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lead Dana Hills (5-7-1, 1-1). Lance Marks also hit a two-run homer for the Dolphins in the first inning at San Clemente (0-2 in league play).

Mission Viejo 4, El Toro 3--Pitcher Erik Cedarstaff got his fourth victory for Mission Viejo (9-2, 2-0) at home. Mission Viejo scored what proved to be the winning run on Jeff Clark’s sacrifice fly in the sixth, which gave the Diablos a 4-2 lead. The Diablos’ Lance Sabella went two for three and drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 8, Huntington Beach 6--Corey Culbert hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give Ocean View (11-3, 3-0) a 7-6 lead. Culbert was three for three with four RBIs.
