The Preps : Track and Field Roundup : A.J. Yates Enjoys Field Day for Los Alamitos

A.J. Yates won two events and anchored two winning relay teams to lead Los Alamitos High School to a 70-65 victory over Loara Thursday in an Empire League boys’ track and field meet at Loara.

The meet came down to the last event, the mile relay, and Yates, running the anchor leg, held off Loara for the victory. Yates won the 100-yard dash (10.3 seconds) and the 220 (23.3) and anchored the Griffins’ 440 relay (45.7) and the mile relay (3:40.7).

Greg Ramsey won the high jump (6-6), the high hurdles (15.4), the 330-yard hurdles (42.5) and the triple jump (41-6) for Loara.

In Empire League girls’ track and field:

Loara 67 1/2, Los Alamitos 60 1/2--Kelly Graton won the high jump (5-7 1/2), the high hurdles (15.5), the intermediate hurdles (50.5) and contributed to the winning 440 relay team (52.1) to lead Loara at home.

In Angelus League boys’ track and field:

Mater Dei 73 1/2, St. Francis 47 1/2--Jason Uhl put the shot 50 feet 6 inches to win the event for Mater Dei at home.

In Century League boys’ track and field:

El Modena 96 2/3, Santa Ana 39 1/3--Robbie Pietsch won the 330 hurdles (42.1) and the 120 high hurdles (15.6), and Ray Vansluis won the pole vault (13-0) and the long jump (19-7) to lead El Modena (2-0 in league) at Santa Ana.

In Century League girls’ track and field:

El Modena 81, Santa Ana 40--Jenni Moore won the 330 hurdles (49.9) and the 110 hurdles (16.8) to lead El Modena (1-1 in league) at Santa Ana.

In Century League girls’ track and field:

Canyon 68, Santa Ana Valley 59--Allison Franke won the discus (147-1), the triple jump (35-10) and the 100-meter hurdles (15.4) for host Canyon. Sheila Green won the long jump (17-1) and was second in the triple jump (35-0 3/4) for Canyon.

In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:

Kennedy 77, Los Amigos 54--Mike Moore won the 100-yard dash (10.0) and 220 (23.7) for Kennedy at Los Amigos. Charlie Cummings won the triple jump (44-0) and Brian Cline the high jump (6-3) for the Fighting Irish.

In Orange League boys’ track and field:

Magnolia 84, Brea-Olinda 44--Phouphet Singbandith won the high jump (6-2), the long jump (21-7) and the triple jump (47-7 1/2) to lead Magnolia at home.

Valencia 94, Western 42--Kevin Thomas won 100-yard dash (9.9) and 220 (22.7) for the Tigers at Western. Valencia’s Eric Whitcomb won the pole vault (14-9), with is the top mark in Orange County this season. Dariel Whipple won the long jump (22-5) for Western.

In Orange League girls’ track and field:

Magnolia 81, Brea-Olinda 44--Luisa Tuimavave won the discus (114-10) and the shotput (32-8) to lead Magnolia at home.

Valencia 104, Western 22--Juliette Yoseloff won the triple jump (32-8) and long jump (16-1) for the Tigers at Western. Heather Killeen won the half mile (2:40.5) and mile (5:47.7) for Valencia.

In Sea View League boys’ track and field:

Corona del Mar 112, Estancia 21--Pat Callaghan won the 100-meter run (11.1) and the 200 (23.7), and Davin Carlson won the long jump (19-6 1/2), triple jump (40-1) and the high hurdles (16.3) to lead the Sea Kings at home.

In Sunset League boys’ track and field:

Ocean View 79, Westminster 48--Ben Caesar won the 100 meters in 10.9 for the Seahawks at Ocean View.

In Sea View League girls’ track and field:

Tustin 88, Saddleback 39--Freshman Christine Garner won the shotput (33-10) and the discus (107-1 1/2) to lead Tustin (2-0) at home. Danetta Chaney won the 100 meters (12.4) and 200 (26.1) to lead Saddleback.

Corona del Mar 90, Estancia 36--Laurie Sawin went 5-2 to win the high jump for the Sea Kings at Corona del Mar.

In Sunset League girls’ track and field:

Edison 70, Fountain Valley 57--Junior Jamie Karrer won the 100 meters (12.2) and the 200 (25.9), and Leslee Briggs won the shotput (36-2) and the discus (119-7) to lead Edison at Fountain Valley.

In Sunset League boys’ track and field:

Edison 81, Fountain Valley 55--Greg Thurston (54-8 3/4), Lamonte Peay (52-10) and Chris Lippincott (50-8) finished 1-2-3 in the shotput for Edison at home.

Ocean View 81, Westminster 43--Michelle Gray won the high jump with a leap of 5-2 for the Seahawks at Ocean View.
