High School Roundup : St. Genevieve Edges Chaminade in 8 Innings

Josh Smith singled to right-center field to drive in Roland De La Maza in the eighth inning, lifting St. Genevieve High over Chaminade, 4-3, in a San Fernando Valley League baseball opener Wednesday at St. Genevieve.

Chaminade (5-10 overall) tied the score, 3-3, in the fifth inning when Pete Miller’s ground out scored Jeff Burdick.

Carlos Concha and Smith combined for six of the Valiants’ nine hits. De La Maza (6-2) limited Chaminade to six hits, all singles. St. Genevieve improved to 7-5, 1-0 in league play.

Freshman Ted Corcoran (1-1) struck out 10 in a losing effort.

In another San Fernando Valley League game:

La Salle 5, Bell-Jeff 2--Senior right-hander Rod Arancibia pitched a five-hitter, but the host Guards had only two hits in a league opener.

Mike Cesta tripled in the third for Bell-Jeff and scored on Tony Armanderiz’s ground out. Arancibia singled in the second for the Guards’ other hit.

Arancibia (2-4) struck out six and walked four for Bell-Jeff (4-7, 0-1), which lost its third game in a row.

MARMONTE LEAGUE

Simi Valley 13, Channel Islands 8--Terry Hill and Andy Hodgins each hit three-run home runs for Simi Valley as the Pioneers collected 13 hits at Channel Islands.

Both Hill, who had three hits and four runs batted in, and Hodgins have three home runs this season to lead Simi Valley. Hodgins had two hits and scored three runs.

Junior left-hander Kenny Hood (3-1) gave up two earned runs, nine hits and struck out three in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

With Simi Valley leading, 10-1, Channel Islands (5-11, 0-6) rallied for five runs in the sixth to cut the Pioneer lead to four. Simi Valley (15-2, 4-1) added three runs in the seventh to clinch the win.

Royal 4, Camarillo 0--James Jones had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the third and junior left-hander Bill Egan pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight for host Royal.

Rob Campos had two singles for Royal (8-11, 3-2) as junior right-hander Matt Tackett held the Highlanders to three hits. Both Egan (3-3) and Tackett (2-4), who struck out four and walked four, went the distance.

Mitch King and Chris Johnson each singled for Camarillo (10-8, 3-2).

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 5, Louisville 0--Kathy Regan pitched her first career no-hitter, struck out nine and did not allow a walk in a San Fernando Valley League game at Chaminade.

Nikki Mehringer had three hits, drove in two runs and stole two bases for Chaminade (11-3, 2-0).

Louisville dropped to 1-7, 2-0 in league play.

Notre Dame 3, Alemany 0--Junior right-hander Becca Berline pitched a two-hitter and struck out four and Simona Errico keyed a two-run Knights’ rally in the third with a squeeze bunt in the San Fernando Valley League game at Notre Dame.

With runners on second and third, Errico bunted to score Kim Fischer from third. Kristi Mullen scored from second and Errico reached base when Alemany first baseman Brenda Garcia dropped the throw for an error.

St. Genevieve 2, Bell-Jeff 0--Michelle McCarthy and Christina Muller each had run-scoring singles and Cindy Vasquez pitched a four-hitter to lead host St. Genevieve (3-8, 1-1) in the San Fernando Valley League game.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. St. Genevieve 15-1, 15-2, 15-3--Nick Wootton had 10 kills and Adam Davirro added eight to pace Harvard in a San Fernando Valley League match. Harvard (8-0, 4-0) is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 3-A Division.
