College Roundup : Cal Lutheran Wins Berth in NAIA Playoffs

The Cal Lutheran baseball team swept Biola, 9-8 and 6-2, Saturday at Biola to clinch a berth in the NAIA District 3 baseball playoffs.

Jeff Brouelette’s bases-loaded double drove in two runs in the 11th inning of the first game, a one-inning continuation of a game suspended March 3.

In the second game, Cal Lutheran pitcher Kevin O’Neil (5-2) went seven innings and gave up two runs on six hits.

Leonard Sumoto had three doubles and two runs batted in and scored a run for Cal Lutheran (27-15, 16-8 in district play). Brouelette was three for four with an RBI and Anthony Espitia was three for five with two RBIs.

In other baseball games:

Cal State San Bernardino 12-4, The Master’s 8-2--The Coyotes hit six homers, including five in the first game, to sweep a nonconference doubleheader at Master’s.

Master’s hit three homers in the first game and scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Peter Wilson’s home run was his 11th of the season and tied the school record set last year by Jeff Holen. Mark MacArthur and Jeff Preston each hit their ninth of the season.

Masters (14-31-1) managed only five singles in the second game.

Cal State Northridge 12-9, Southern Utah State 1-6--Craig Clayton helped the Matadors sweep the Thunderbirds by striking out seven batters in the last five innings of the second game in Cedar City, Utah.

The freshman also had two doubles in the game and Greg Hansen hit a two-run home run in the second inning for the Matadors (26-15-1).

In the first game, Vale Lopez threw a five-hitter while CSUN pounded out 18 hits off three Southern Utah pitchers.

Northridge dropped a one-inning make up of Friday’s snow-delayed game when Southern Utah (15-26) scored a run to win, 10-9.

Oxnard 13, Moorpark 2--Steve Sisco doubled and added a solo home run in the eighth inning for host Moorpark (22-15, 11-9) in the Western State Conference game.

Oxnard’s John Stuart pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run and eight hits.

Ventura 8, Pierce 2--Scott Cadenhead went one for three and drove in both Pierce runs in the Brahmas’ WSC loss at home.

Louis Birdt (0-2) pitched 7 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits and five walks. He also had four strikeouts. Tony Dello was two for four and Billy Morris was two for four with a double for Pierce (15-19, 8-11).

Ventura clinched at least a share of the conference title. Canyons can tie Ventura for the WSC title with a victory Monday over Pierce.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 4-5, Cal State Bakersfield 0-8--Heather Lindstrom gave up three hits and posted her 11th shutout in the first game as the Lady Matadors split a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at CSUN.

Lindstrom had four strikeouts and Lisa Erickson and Leilani Artis each had two hits.

In the second game, CSUN committed three errors in Cal State Bakersfield’s five-run third inning. All five runs were unearned against starter Debbie Dickmann (26-5).

Anna Getherall, Erin McGuire and Artis each had two hits for the Lady Matadors (54-16, 16-4), who already had clinched their eight consecutive conference title.

Cal Lutheran 4-11, Loyola Marymount 1-0--Cal Lutheran (31-16) won its final regular-season games with a sweep of Division I Loyola at home.

DeeAndra Pilkington (15-4) pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game, her third shutout in her past four outings. Dana Sangster (5-7) pitched a one-hitter and retired the last 13 batters in the first game.

Pilkington was two for four in the opener with two RBIs.
