Channel Islands High vented a season’s worth of frustration and Newbury Park felt the loss of its No. 1 pitcher as the last-place Raiders knocked off the Marmonte League-leading Panthers, 17-1, Wednesday at Newbury Park.

Channel Islands (6-16, 2-9 in league play) amassed 18 hits against six Newbury Park pitchers.

Senior John Johnson had four hits and three runs batted in, George Alvarado had three hits and three RBIs, and Jacob Cruz and Patrick Avila each had two hits and three RBIs.

Tim Beal, Newbury Park’s ace before he was removed from the team a week and a half ago for violating school policy, has left a gap in the rotation. Senior Jeff O’Brien started in his place but did not make it out of the third inning. He and a parade of relief pitchers didn’t get much help, either--the defense made nine errors.

Channel Islands led, 7-0, after three innings, 9-0, after four innings and, 15-1, after six. Manuel Padilla gave up seven hits in a complete-game victory.

The Panthers (17-3-3), who beat Simi Valley, 8-3, Friday, appeared headed toward their first league title since 1977. However, the loss dropped them into a tie with idle Simi Valley. Both teams are 8-2.
