The Preps : Roundup : Mater Dei Defeats Rosary on One-Hitter by Cobata

Terri Cobata pitched a one-hitter as Mater Dei High School defeated Rosary, 8-1, Thursday in an Angelus League softball game at Mater Dei.

Cobata (7-4) struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. She allowed only a single by Jennifer Salazar in the sixth inning.

Mater Dei (15-6-2 overall, 5-3-1 in league play) scored four runs in the first inning. Rose Imbriano had a bases-loaded triple in the inning.

Amy Moeller had two hits and two stolen bases for Mater Dei.

In the Century League:

Canyon 4, Villa Park 1--Sara Roberts (7-2) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, as Canyon (17-9, 7-1) moved into sole possession of first place with a victory at Villa Park. Seneth Thomas had two hits, including a solo home run, and two RBIs for Canyon. Villa Park (13-12, 6-2) falls to second place.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 5, Katella 1--Tracie Noggle had a single, a stolen base and scored two runs, and Laura Barber scored two runs to lead Esperanza (7-12, 3-5) at home.

Los Alamitos 4, El Dorado 0--Sheryn Skoglund (4-3) pitched a three-hitter, striking out one, for Los Alamitos (12-10, 6-2) at El Dorado. The Griffins scored four runs in the first inning.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 2, Buena Park 0--Cathleen Kennedy pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking one, and had two RBIs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning for Fullerton (9-14, 3-5) at Buena Park (6-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 3, Anaheim 2 (10 innings)--Natalie Stevens’ two-out double drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th for Brea-Olinda (14-6, 6-2) at Tamarack Park in Brea. Kelly Cook (14-5) pitched a seven-hitter, striking out 17, for the victory.

Valencia 1, Savanna 0 (11 innings)--Danette Davis hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th to give the Tigers the victory. Natasha Dumoski (10-11) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 14, for the victory.

Western 9, Magnolia 0--Lisa Sciarrino had three hits, including a three-run homer, and Beth Queypo had three hits and three RBIs for the Pioneers (20-5, 6-2). Dawn Fowler (8-4) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, for the victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 5, Costa Mesa 0--Margo Melendrez (13-5) pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12, for the Hawks (17-6, 6-2) at Laguna Hills. Shelley Carey and Crissy Bulicz each hit two-run homers for Laguna Hills.

Trabuco Hills 22, Laguna Beach 0 (6 innings)--Linda Lunceford pitched a one-hitter for her second consecutive shutout as Trabuco Hills (13-11, 7-1) tallied 18 hits in a victory at Laguna Beach (2-6). The win ties Trabuco Hills with Woodbridge for first place.

Woodbridge 8, Orange 0--Lisa Wehren (10-6) pitched a one-hitter through five innings for the Warriors (14-9, 7-1) at Woodbridge. The Warriors scored seven runs in the first inning. Kim Johnson had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Woodbridge.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 8, Orange Lutheran 1--Isela Duque had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for Whittier Christian (10-6, 9-3) at La Mirada Regional Park. Veronica Martinez (10-5) pitched a six-hitter, striking out four, for the victory.

In the Century League individual golf finals:

Steve Greenfield of Canyon shot a 150 to win the two-day tournament at Western Hills Country Club. Duane Jensen of Foothill and Trey Selman of Villa Park tied for second, as they both shot a 156. The top three qualifiers from each league advance to the Southern Section match, May 22 at the Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

In the Garden Grove League individual golf finals:

Garden Grove swept the two-day tournament at El Prado Golf Course in Chino. Sophomore Jim Spurlock was the top finisher with a 13-over-par 157. Ken Wertzberger (158) and Crain Frey (160) placed second and third respectively.

In the Pacific Coast League individual golf finals:

Rocky Mounce of Orange shot a 14-over-par 158 to win the two-day tournament at Fallbrook Country Club. Mark Christensen of Trabuco Hills and Chad Fincher of Woodbridge tied for second with a 159.

In the Angelus League individual tennis finals:

Senior Dax Peterson of Mater Dei defeated his freshman brother, Adam, 6-4, 6-2, to win the league’s singles championship at Industry Hills. Mater Dei’s doubles team of Jason Harnett and Adam Jarrett won the doubles title.

In Garden Grove League volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Pacifica 2--Pat Reilly had 18 kills as La Quinta (12-3,12-0) won, 13-15, 15-8, 8-15, 15-8, 15-4, at Pacifica.

In Sunset League volleyball:

Marina 3, Ocean View 1--Braden Coenen had 16 kills to lead Marina (12-4, 7-3) at home.

Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 0--Outside hitter Scott Drake and middle blocker Steve Lucas each had 13 kills to help Huntington Beach (14-2, 9-1) clinch the league title in three games, 15-3, 15-9, 15-12.
