CCAA Votes Schnare Top Woman Athlete

Tina Schnare of the Cal State Northridge swimming and diving team has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. woman Athlete of the Year for 1988-89 in a poll of conference sports information directors.

Schnare led the Lady Matadors to their third consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II title in March. She is the only woman to win NCAA titles in the same events--the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke--four consecutive years.

She is also the Division II record-holder in both events, with a time of 1 minute, 4.76 seconds in the 100 and 2:19.78 in the 200. Schnare was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay team, which set a meet record of 3:52.64, and she swam on the 200-yard medley relay team, which finished second at nationals.

Anthony Blackmon, a 6-foot-7 senior center-forward from Cal State Dominguez Hills, was named the CCAA male Athlete of the Year. He averaged 19.7 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.

An all-star baseball game featuring teams representing City Section and Orange County high schools has been postponed until June 15. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at USC’s Dedeaux Field.

A team of 18 to 20 seniors from City Section schools will be selected after a workout today at Westchester High.

John Tomac of Chatsworth was the top U. S. finisher in the fifth stage of cycling’s Milk Race on Friday, moving to within 38 seconds of overall leader Nick Bishop of Great Britain. Tomac, 21, was eighth in the 64.2-mile stage from Stoke-On-Trent to Sheffield, England, and stands ninth overall in the approximately 1,200-mile race.

Four coaches have been selected for a high school all-star softball game sponsored by the Daily News. The game is scheduled for June 17 at 2:15 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.

Kennedy’s Diane Laborde and Chaminade’s Ken Zak will coach the West team. The East team will be coached by Sylmar’s Chuck Miller and Ron Hilton of Saugus.

Three drivers will compete for a season-high third main-event victory tonight as the NASCAR Sportsman Division series continues at Saugus Speedway.

Will Harper of Tarzana, Dave Phipps of Simi Valley and Keith Spangler of Northridge, each with two victories, will compete in a 40-lap main event.

Gates open at 4. Qualifying begins at 5 and racing starts at 7.
