Girls’ Softball Roundup : St. Joseph’s Wins Title by Defeating Gahr, 1-0

Anna Fuentes of Lakewood St. Joseph’s High School hit a double in the seventh inning Saturday night that scored pitcher Lisa Fernandez from third base as Lakewood St. Joseph’s High school defeated Gahr, 1-0, to win the Southern Section 5-A Division girls’ softball championship at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Fernandez (24-1) threw a one-hitter and struck out 18. Losing pitcher De De Weiman (24-1-1) had a two-hitter and 11 strikeouts. Both will attend UCLA.

Covina 2, Mission Viejo 0--Mary Letourneau pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Colts won the 3-A Division final at Mayfair Park.

Letourneau (24-0-1), who came into the game with an 0.12 earned-run average, recorded her 17th shutout of the season.

Covina got four hits and two runs off Mission Viejo starting pitcher Erin Fitzgerald (12-5). Reliever Kerin Dull gave up three hits.

Covina took over the game in the second inning when it scored both its runs.

After Amy Bond made a diving catch on Letourneau’s line drive to center field, Lea Hollister and April Ruedaflores hit singles.

Cassy Hollister then a hit ground ball to shortstop. Jennifer Ward tried to force Hollister out at third but her throw went past the third baseman. Lea Hollister scored on the error and Ruedaflores took third.

Fitzgerald then struck out Dawn Sawyer but Hollister stole second. Cindy Escobedo hit a single to score Ruedaflores before the inning ended.

Mission Viejo’s Dull replaced Fitzgerald to start the third after Fitzgerald aggravated a back injury.

“I hurt it before the (second round) of the La Mirada game,” Fitzgerald said.

“In the second inning, I started to have pain in my lower left side and it spread. (By the third), it shot all the way across my back. It just really hurt.”
